Iron Man flies in to Kay Theatre Thursday

It's not the Man of Steel, but a man of iron that will fly onto the outdoor movie screen Thursday night at the Kay Theatre.

"Iron Man," director Jon Favreau's film starring Robert Downey Jr., will be shown as part of the Kay Foundation's summer movie series.

Movie times are "around dusk," and viewers should bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and watch. A snack bar will be available and organizers "pass the hat" to help raise funds for the theater's restoration.

The Kay is located in the 300 block of North Main Street downtown. Movies will be screened each Thursday through July 30.

Through Tuesday 22 highs of 100 had been recorded at KRXTFM, Rockdale's U. S. Weather Service observer.

Volunteers knock down fire near new school

Rockdale volunteer firefighters quickly extinguished a fast-moving grass blaze Monday afternoon near the new intermediate school.

The alarm came in at 2:14 p.m. calling volunteers to the construction site, at the western city limits off US 79.

Fire Chief Warren Matous said sparks from a worker cutting pipe started the fire.

"That shows you how dry it is out there," Matous said.
