'I FELL INTO A BURNING RING OF FIRE'
Rockdale VFD volunteers may have felt like that famous line from a Johnny Cash song after battling the "brush fire that wouldn't die" in a heavily wooded area north of Sherwood Forest Mobile Home Park last week. First reported at 4:26 p.m. Thursday, the blaze required seven callbacks, the last one at 11:15 p.m. Saturday. "It was very hard to get to and was fast moving," Fire Chief Warren Matous said. Milano, Thorndale and Tanglewood volunteers assisted at the scene. Matous said the fire's cause is "undetermined and under investigation." At 2:13 p.m. Tuesday, volunteers were back in the same area as another major brush fire near Belton threatened barns and kept Rockdale and Milano volunteers on the run. At one point some RVFD members answered a call to a smaller grass fire on Burleson Street. Full Story
Trustees eye upgrade to RHS baseball field
Rockdale ISD trustees, meeting last Wednesday in special session, took the first step toward upgrading the RHS baseball field. Meeting after concluding the annual school board facilities tour (see page 1B), board members also tied up some loose ends from the recent on-line auction of portable buildings which will not be used due to the RISD's building project. Free clothing distribution on Saturday
Free clothing will be available, first-come, first-served, from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Lodge at the corner of Pecan at Third, in the second annual East Side clothing giveaway. Some new but "mostly gently worn" clothing of all sizes for children, youth teens and women is available with a limited amount of men's clothing. Full Story
