For someone who wasn't sure if he would ever compete in sports again, Cody Schneider certainly made the best of a second chance.

The graduated Thorndale senior was named one of the top 50 area athletes in a listing by the Austin American- Statesman.

Schneider, who will attend Texas A&M as a student only, was ranked No. 8 by the newspaper.

Six-foot-8 swimmer/basketball player Dax Hill of Round Rock was rated the best.

Schneider was not expected to play football this season after suffering a back injury, but surprisingly returned at mid-season and led the Bulldogs to the playoffs and was named the district MVP.

Schneider also captured a bronze medal in the 400-meter dash at the state track meet.

Schneider was joined on the top 500 list by classmate Lindsey Youngblood, who along with twin sister Morgan, led the Lady Bulldogs to new athletic heights in their careers, including three trips to the regional finals in basketball and an appearance at the state tournament.

Youngblood also competed in cross country and track where she made several trips to the state meets.
