Con artists need your help to be successful

Con artists need our help. If you are unwilling to supply them w ith information, they cannot complete their missions.

A good example comes from Hassan Ahmed an attorney. His e-mail gives us little information about him and less about those addressed in the e-mail. The entire letter is one small paragraph plus one sentence that ends with the sender's name.

Ahmed explains that his client died the day he learned about the death of his entire family. The 2004 tsunami in Indonesia killed everyone in the family.

What was the name of this wealthy family? The e-mail states that it is the same as yours. The only way to reach Hassan is through the link he provides. The letter does mention that $19 million is unclaimed by any family member.

The wording is brief but tricky.

"A deceased client of mine that shares the same last name with you, died as a result of a heartrelated condition in March 12th 2007. Leaving behind a deposit valued at $19 million dollars. His heart condition was due to the death of all the members of his family in the tsunami disaster on the 26th December 2004 in Sumatra, Indonesia.

You would think no one would fall for this scam, but it happens.

Why do we make the mental substitutions for the last name of the deceased? It is not mentioned specifically in the e-mail.

The e-mail does plant the seed and we permit it to grow, in our minds, that it is the same as ours. Why else would anyone contact Ahmed through this link?

The instructions cannot be reported here, because the link is not being contacted under any circumstances.

It seems more information is needed for further research, so the name, Hassan Ahmed, was googled in.

This resulted in a big surprise. It seems that Hassan Ahmed is a very popular name and very common.

It took 68 seconds to f ind 2,140,000 results. This is too much to wade through. The search needed to be more narrow.

Hassan Ahmed scam was googled in and it took 31 seconds to find 35,000 results. Results mention web sites like fraudwatchers.org and 419baiter. com that will become a valuable resource for this column and for you.

Another website dedicated to fight scams, frauds and misinformation is www.scamdex.com. Scamdex is a company organized in 2004 and its headquarters are located in Sacramento, California.

Add these to the list. You never know what is coming your way.

Milam County TRIAD's purpose is to educate the senior citizens of Milam County, so they know how to treat those that attempt to scam.

Having the tools to fight back will level the playing field and protect seniors savings.

The problem facing us, as we age, is that we want to do what is good, right, and proper, and the con artists use it against us. We are the ones being tricked into writing the check. Seniors are the ones giving our money away.
