The 30th edition of the Rockdale Open is scheduled for July 22-26 at the Veterans Memorial Park tennis courts.

The youth portion of the tournament will be held July 22-24 and features seven separate categories for players aged 10 thru 18, including singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Trophies will be presented to first and second place finishers in each event. Two matches are guaranteed for the youth division.

The adult section of the tournament is July 25-26 with an open division and a tournament division with five different sections.

Entry fee is $12 per person, per event and there is a limit of two events per person.

The deadline for entry forms is Friday, July 17. They are available at The Reporter or on line.

The first 50 youth and first 50 adults who register will receive a free Rockdale Open t-shirt.

Fund-raisers ahead for Elite softballers

The Rockdale girls softball team, Elite, will travel to the state tournament the week of July 20- 24 in Early after going undefeated and winning first place in the district tournament.

To help offset trip expenses, the team will hold two fundraisers this week: a bake sale on Friday, July 17 at the Rockdale Federal Credit Union from 8 a.m. until sold out, and a car wash on Saturday, July 18 at Texas Burger/ Subway from 8 a.m. until noon.

"Your support will be greatly appreciated and donations will be gladly accepted," said Yvette McCoy, publicist.

RYFL signup date scheduled July 18

The Rockdale Youth Football League will hold sign ups on Saturday July 18 at City Park from 9 a.m. to noon.

Participation fee is $80 ($55 for flag) with a $25 equipment deposit.

A copy of player's birth certificate and last report card is required and parents must sign a code of conduct with registration.

Dawson scholarship softball fundraiser set

There will be a Crazy 16 coed softball tournament held Saturday, July 25 in order to raise money for a Germaine Dawson scholarship fund.

Games will begin at 9 a.m. at the girls softball complex off Bushdale Road.

Entr y fee is $5 per player (minimum $50 per team).

There will also be a concession stand and fish plates will be available.

There will also be raffles and drawing for prizes.

Thorndale youth football registering

THORNDALE—The Thorndale Youth Football League is currently registering for the 2009 season.

Fees are $45 for flag football and $75 for tackle football. Registration ends on Aug. 1 with practices starting the first week of August.

Avrett and Daimler net Hotter Than Heck

AUSTIN—Truett Avrett and Tracy Daimler captured the "Hotter Than Heck" United States Tennis Association tennis tournament at The Courtyard over the Fourth of July weekend.

The tournament lived up to its name, it was 117 degrees on the court during the finals.

Avrett and his partner finished first in the 4.0 division.

They defeated Rawlins/ Toborg 6-3, 3-6, 10-2; Gow/Polito 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the semifinals and Collier/ Pruett 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.

Hunter education class on tap for Aug. 29-30

A hunter education class will be held in Rockdale August 29-30.

The class will be held from 8 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 and 1 to 5 p.m. on August 30th.

All classes will be held at the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department training facility. The course fee is $15 per student.
