Two meetings ahead for RISD school board

Rockdale ISD school board members will meet for a regular session at 5:30 p.m. Monday and a goal planning workshop at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Central Administration Building.

Supt. Dr. Howell Wright said items on Monday's agenda include the student code of conduct 2009- 10 salary schedule and a school opening readiness report.

Trustees met in a called session Thursday and approved two change orders related to the new building construction projects and hired Leslie Hasselbach as an eighthgrade teacher.

'Moon-flight' is Kay Theatre film Thursday

Appropriately for a week in which the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing was commemorated, "Fly Me to the Moon," will be the free film Thursday outdoors at the Kay Theatre.

Movie times are "around dusk," and viewers should bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. A snack bar will be available and organizers will "pass the hat" to help raise funds for the theater's restoration.

The Kay is located in the 300 block of North Main Street.

2010 political season gets early Milam start

CAMERON—The 2010 political season is under way in Milam County as County Judge Frank Summers has designated his wife Rae Beth as his campaign treasurer.

"It's really not that unusual to designate a treasurer this far in advance of an election," Elections Coordinator Sherry Mueck said. "Some candidates will just keep a treasurer designated all the time."

County offices on the ballot in 2010 include county judge, county clerk, district clerk, commisioners in Precincts 2 and 4 and all four juistices of the peace.

Not guilty' plea seen in case of NY priest

An 84-year-old Staten Island, New York priest, accused of sexual assault and prohibited sexual contact in May, 2008, in Rockdale, is expected to enter a "not guilty" plea through his attorneys next week in 20th District Court.

Father Stephen Valenta was indicted on the two charges in April by a Milam County grand jury after an investigation by Rockdale police.

Police said the charges against Father Valenta were made by an "female adult family member" of the priest.

Pounders benefit set Saturday in Hare

HARE—A benefit for Rockdale resident Freddie Pounders, who has undergone heart surgery, is set for 7 p.m. to midnight at Poncho & Lefty's in Hare.

Admittance is a donation of $6 each at the door. Music will be by Runnin' Ragged, Undecided, Chad Boyd and Matt Hicks.

Thorndale council okays S&W insurance

THOR NDALE—City council members in Thorndale met Thursday and awarded an employee health and life insurance contract to Scott & White, according to City Clerk Stacy Irwin.

The council also approved the 2007-08 audit from Warner & Associates, approved a $1,000 contribution to the Milam County Historical Commission and purchased a new backhoe.

Subdivision request topic for P&Z board

The City of Rockdale's Planning & Zoning Board will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday at City Hall to act on a short form subdivision request submitted by Ken McEntire of APEX Surveying & Mapping.

The request involves a tract of land directly across Cameron Avenue (US 79) from McCawley Oaks. The tract has recently been cleared.
