I was one of the last holdouts of my "group." I said I was not going to be on MySpace or Facebook. I was also not going to learn to text on my cellphone. I distinctly remember saying that. A PEARL OF A PARTY
It was just that—a pearl of a party—Friday evening at the Patterson Civic Center when almost 100 people turned out to honor Pearlie Mack (center) with a surprise 78th birthday party. Pearlie and Obie Mack (right with microphone, paying tribute to his wife) will be married 60 years in November. "We had so many helping with the planning it was a miracle that she didn't get wind of it," Obie Mack said. The event was complete with a lavish buffet meal served up by family and friends. Surrounding the honoree (above L-R) were the couple's children: Linda Thomason of Fort Worth, Melissa Murray of Dallas, Larry Mack (behind Pearlie) of San Antonio, Brenda Teler of Hurst, Peggy Payne of Watauga (near Fort Worth) and Willie Ben Mack of Denton. Each gave a spoken tribute to their mother. Gospel soloists were Flower Gipson, Wendell Tyler and Pastor Roderick D. Jackson of New Hope Baptist Church. More than 100 family, friends and former customers of Belle and Jim Greer attended Mrs. Greer's 90th birthday party, held at Patterson Civic Center in Rockdale on Sunday, July 12. The Greers owned and operated The Fabric Shop, a popular downtown business, for 30 years. Here, the honoree (seated) is greeted by Faye Davidson. Jim's sister, 92, came from Lubbock. A cast and crew of more than 60 people have been working hard this summer to stage one of Broadway's most beloved musicals: "The Sound of Music." Brenten is a 2003 Rockdale High School graduate and a 2007 graduate of Texas A&M University. He is employed with H-E-B Retail Support Center in San Antonio. Stephanie is a 2004 graduate of Buckholts High School and attended Blinn College. She is employed as a veterinarian technician in Schertz. Our Local Hero this week is Ramona Barlow. Mrs. Barlow is a retired teacher who taught history at Rockdale Junior High for 25 years.
