Tigers gearing up for football season

While Central Texans continue to seek refuge from the endless triple-digit temperatures, the approaching football season will not be thwarted and there are a couple of important dates that potential Tiger football players need to keep in mind.

Equipment will be issued at the field house on Monday, Aug. 4, beginning at 7 a.m. sharp.

That will be followed by the first day of practice which is set to begin at 8 a.m. and continue until noon.

Beginning the next day, Tuesday, Aug. 4, practice will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. until noon

The practice of Aug. 7 will mark the Tigers' first practice in full pads.

While the opening day of the regular season is Friday, Aug. 28, when the Tigers will travel to Llano for the 7:30 kickoff, Rockdale has a couple of scrimmages set up before then.

The Tigers will travel to Giddings on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 10:30 a.m. for their first scrimmage and then will host Robinson on Thursday, Aug. 20 for a 7 p.m. scrimmage.

The annual "Meet the Tigers" social and cake auction will take place Monday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. in the junior high gym.

Rockdale is ranked 15th in the state and the favorite to capture the District 24-3A championship.

Volleyball

Volleyball is set to start on August 3 as well.

All participants must bring their own t-shirt and shorts for the first few weeks.

Workouts will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. This schedule will continue through Aug. 7.

New Coach Jason Williams encourages everyone to arrive 15 minutes early.

A high school volleyball parents meeting will be held Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at the high school gym.

The Lady Tigers will scrimmage on August 8 and then open the season by traveling to Lexington on Tuesday, August 11 for a 5 p.m. match.

A freshman volleyball camp will be held July 27-30 from

to 11 a.m. in the junior high gym and the cost for the camp is $25.

Medical forms

If you are going to participate in Rockdale High School football, volleyball or cross-country this coming school year in grades 9-12, you must have all the required UIL and RISD medical forms turned in to the athletic office by Wednesday, July 29.

Students going into grades 9 and 11 must have a new physical examination and the four page "yellow form" packet.

Students going into the 10th and 12th grades only need to complete the "Yellow form" packet if they already have a physical exam on-file from last year.

These medical forms may be picked up from the RISD Athletic office on Murray at Tiger Stadium. Football and volleyball practices begin on the morning of Monday, August 3.

Junior high football and volleyball athletes need their medical forms turned-in by Wednesday, Aug. 19. New 7th grade athletes will need both the physical exam and the "yellow form" packet, while returning 8th grade athletes only need the "yellow form" packet.

RHS athletes other than football, volleyball or cross country need their medical forms turnedin the first week of school.

Physicals

Physicals will be administered on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 to 11:00 a.m. at Rockdale Junior High Gym for grades 7, 9 and 11.

Cost will be $15.

Students getting a physical exam need to have the medical history form already completed when they arrive at RJH.

Forms were handed out at the end of the school year but those needing forms can pick them up at the Rockdale Athletic office.

Junior High

Rockdale Junior High football and volleyball players can begin picking up their equipment on Aug. 22 with practices to begin on Aug. 25.

Football equipment will be issued on Friday, Aug. 21 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for eighth graders, while the seventh graders can receive their equipment from 11 to 1 p.m.

Junior high players may purchase their own football cleats, but they must be black.

Practices begin Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 7 a.m. for seventh graders and at 2:30 p.m. for eighth graders.

Volleyball equipment will also be handed out on Friday, Aug. 21 for the eighth graders from 8 to 10 a.m. and the seventh graders from 3 to 5 p.m.

Practices begin the first day of school, Aug. 24.

Seventh graders will practice at 3:30 p.m. and eighth graders at 4:30 p.m.

All athletes must have physicals and other paper work turned in and on file to participate and get their equipment.

Tickets

Advanced reserved seat football tickets for previous season ticket holders will be sold at the athletic office on Aug. 3-6, Aug. 10-13 and Aug. 17 and 18 from 8 a.m. to noon.

If you would like to be placed on the waiting list for tickets, please call the athletic office at 430-6150 between 8 a.m. and noon.

Beginning Monday Aug. 24, anyone else wanting to purchase reserve seat season tickets may do so in the athletic office from 8 a.m. to noon.

The cost of season tickets will be $25 for five home games.

Press Day

According to head coach Jeff Miller, picture day/press day for RHS football and athletic trainers has been set for Saturday, Aug. 8 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Tiger Field.

Mom and sons picture will also be taken.

Volleyball pictures will be taken the same day at 8 a.m. in RHS Gymnasium.
