Granger grad Pekar roars to Open title

Cooke-Avrett team up for Open doubles crown

Garett Pekar of Granger had to defeat UHMB teammate and Thorndale native Dylan Schwartz for the open men's singles title and then the twosome turned around and competed in open doubles. The 30th edition of the Rockdale Open had familiar names regain the thrones of tennis' best...at least in this town.

Names like Cooke, Av rett, Wallingford and Maldonado took home titles in the 2009 Open.

Excitment was in the air for great tennis and also because play was suspended for almost half an hour during the youth tournament because of a sudden downpour.

The Avrett family from Conroe took home a car load of trophies, taking part in four tournament titles.

The Wallingford contingent, from Franklin, which has been a mainstay at the Open for years, also made their presence felt with two first place finishes.

Garett Pekar of Granger and Dylan Schwarz of Thorndale, both tennis players at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, battled it out on the court for the open men's singles title. Pekar bested his teammate 6-4, 6-3.

Hugo Ayala (L) and Elisabeth Thomason both competed in the junior singles divisions at the Rockdale Open. Hugo Ayala (L) and Elisabeth Thomason both competed in the junior singles divisions at the Rockdale Open. The UMHB students made it all the way to the finals of the open men's doubles, where they met up with a more experienced pair in Truett Avrett of Conroe and Rockdale's Ken Esten Cooke.

Both were standout aces at RHS during their day. Avrett and Cooke defeated Pekar and Schwarz 6-3, 6-4.

Avrett snagged another title when he and partner Tracy Daim- ler of Houston, also an RHS grad, defeated Tom and Anna Maldonado of Rockdale in the open mixed doubles division.

Anna Maldonado and daughter Alethea teamed up to defeat Monee Michna of Taylor and Paige Welborn of Cameron in the open women's doubles division. Michna was a part of last year's mixed doubles champions with David Cuebas of Taylor.

There was no draw for a women's singles division.

Rick Spencer of Lexington swept through his competion to capture the men's single tournament division. He defeated Chris Tutt of Cameron in the finals.

Rockdale's own Henry Hawkins and Dusty Loewe outlasted the competition for the tournament men's doubles title.

Younger crowd

Although numbers were down in the youth tournament, competition was still ferce.

The Wallingfords—Erica and Brett—were defeated in the 18 mixed doubles by Rockdale's Joe Sanders and Annie Wilde. The RHS duo advanced to the UIL regional tournament last spring.

Erica Wallingford forged ahead and took the 16 girls singles crown over Coty Gola of Taylor, 6-0, 6-3.

Brent Wallingford was the 14 boys singles winner, stopping Nicholas Pelzel of Rockdale 6-0, 6-1.

Pelzel and Jacob Crump of Rockdale took the 14 boys doubles bracket, going undefeated in round robin play.

Nicole Keratsopoulos of Cameron conquered the 14 girls singles bracket, besting both her opponents, Autumn Davenport and Erin Free of Rockdale, in straight sets.

Billy Webb of LaGrange won the 18 boys singles championship by defeating Wynton Thomason of Rockdale 6-4, 6-4.

Lorena's Chandler Kramer, playing in his first ever tournament, was the 10 boys singles champion, and then teamed up with Tiernan Avrett of Conroe for the 10 boys doubles title.

Former Thorndale star Dylan Schwarz lost to his Mary Hardin-Baylor doubles partner Garett Pekar in the men's open singles. Former Thorndale star Dylan Schwarz lost to his Mary Hardin-Baylor doubles partner Garett Pekar in the men's open singles. TOURNEY SUMMARY
