Genealogy group hears about North Carolina

Milam County Genealogical Society met July 28 with 12 members present. President Randy Billingsley announced that the sign advertising the genealogy center in the Lucy Patterson Librar y is ready and w ill be installed in front of the library.

Sara Proctor presented a program on her family and growing up in North Carolina. Her father, a photographer by hobby, had many original ideas in his family photography. Mrs. Proctor brought copies of some family Christmas greetings that her father designed during her childhood.

She also described living conditions and travel in the North Carolina area, with stories about the Alcoa company town in Baden, NC, the earliest aluminum plant in the U.S.

Next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 in the conference room at Citizens National Bank's rear entrance. Visitors are welcomed.—Linda Whorton, publicity

Black powder shooting club to organize here

A black powder shooting organizational meeting has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at the American Legion shooting range ( formerly Rockdale Gun Club).

From the Rockdale post office, drive north on FM 487 about 1.8 miles, turn left on FM 1712, go one mile and turn at sign on right. Range is through the gate at the top of the hill.

"Purpose of the meeting is to organize a black powder shooting club for the Rockdale area," said Les W. Davenport, spokesman.

Rockdale Girls Scouts are registering for the 2009-2010 year. Registration fee is $12. For more information call Heather Bartley, (512) 269-8713.

Rockdale Rotary Club

Rockdale Rotary Club meets at noon each Tuesday at the New Salem Clubhouse at Fair Park.

Noon Lions Club

Rockdale Noon Lions Club meets each first and third Wednesday at the Rockdale VFD fire station.

Historical Society

Rockdale Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. each second Tuesday at the I&GN Railroad depot museum downtown. All persons with an interest in local history are invited.

Milam County MOPS

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is enrolling members for the 2009- 2010 year. MOPS is open to any mother with children ages bir thkindergarten. Fees $25. Meetings will begin in September at First Baptist Church in Rockdale at 9:30 a.m. the second Wednesday of the month. Breakfast, guest speakers, crafts, fellowship. Childcare provided for 5 and under. Downtown Association

Rockdale Downtown Association meets at 5:30 p.m. each first Monday at Bit of History, 114 E. Cameron Avenue. For more information, call Chris Dyess, 446-6680.

Kay Theater Foundation meets at 5:30 p.m. each third Monday at Bit of History, 114 E. Cameron.

Alzheimer's support

Alzheimer's Family Support Group meets in the conference room at Renaissance Villa each first Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m.

VistaCare volunteers

VistaCare Hospice volunteers meet at 11:30 a.m. each third Thursday at Murray Street Church of Christ.
