75 acres burn in Saturday pasture fire near Sharp

Twelve units from four Milam County volunteer fire departments were needed to put out a major pasture fire at 12200 N. FM 487, approximately two miles north of the Sharp community Saturday afternoon.

Rockdale VFD personnel were called to the scene at 4:26 p.m. after the initial tone went out to the Thorndale VFD. TVFD was on another pasture fire call at 7694 CR 455.

Rockdale VFD first assistant chief Ward Roddam said the decision was made soon after arriving on scene for mutual aid from the Buckholts and Cameron VFDs. Thorndale volunteers also made it to the scene as well.

Roddam said approximately 75 acres of open pasture and wild grass land burned after being sparked during hay bailing activities. The fire jumped the road.

A dozer from the forestry service out of LaGrange was also called to the scene.

The last local personnel returned to the station around 11 p.m. and the dozer from the Forestry Service was on scene until 2 a.m., Roddam said.

Other fire calls dispatched during the past week from the Rockdale Police Depar tment included:

• 10:38 a.m. Thursday, 18- wheeler and car accident, S. Highway 36 and 79 intersection, Milano VFD.

• 4:50 p.m. Saturday, small grass fire, Miller St. and Murray Ave., Rockdale VFD.

• 10:02 p.m. Saturday, tree fell on power line and was sparking, Broadway St., Thorndale VFD.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
