Friends of the Library to meet on Thursday

Friends of the Library, a support group for the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial (city) Library, will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 in the library to discuss upcoming events, according to Annette Stone, spokesperson. All persons interested in the library and its many services are invited.

Special Needs Support Group to meet Tuesday

Special Needs Support Group is a group of parents, family members, care givers, advocates and educators who meet to discuss issues that affect families of children who are differently-abled.

This month's meeting will be on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Topic will be "Organizing the IEP File." Also up for discussion will be general concerns, fund-raising activities for our Walk Now for Autism team, and future meeting topics.

The Special Needs Support Group for Milam County meets the third Tuesday of each month at the New Jerusalem Christian Center in Rockdale at 6:30 p.m. The church is located on Mulberry and 4th Street, near the Rockdale Depot Museum and Wolf Park, south of the railroad tracks behind the cemetery. Linwood Garden Club next meeting set Sept. 9

Linwood Acres Garden Club will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the historic home of Carole Simank in San Gabriel. Co-hostesses will be Johnnielyn Brown and Marie Freiling. Coffee and refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m., followed by the program at 10.

Melba Caffey will present a program on "The History of LAGC." The business meeting will commence at 10:30 a.m. All members are encouraged to attend as 2009-2010 yearbooks will be distributed and reviewed.

Yard-of-the-month judges for September are Jeanette Hudson and Joy Reagan. Linwood Acres Garden Club recognizes outstanding residential yards or commercial landscaping in the Rockdale area on the basis of conditions of plantings, quality of maintenance, overall eye appeal, and use of color or yard sculpture. Winning yards are featured in The Reporter. Yards may be nominated by calling the Chamber of Commerce, 446-2030. Caregiver Support Group hears program on 'stress'

A Caregiver Support Group meeting was held Monday evening at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce office, 102 East 1st Street in Cameron.

Topic was "Dealing with Stress" and guest speaker was Mona Butala, OTR, director of the Occupational Therapy Department with Little River Medical Center.

"Caring for someone, whether they are in your home, in a care facility, or whether they are 2000 miles away can be mentally, physically and spiritually exhausting," she said.

"This was a sharing meeting," she added, "and attendees discussed times and topics for the next few meetings."

Writers' Workshop to meet Thursday at 6 p.m. in library

Rockdale Writers' Workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the city library, workshop founder Floyd H. Palmer has announced. Topic will be "Chapter/Journey—Story progress in creative and sectioned happenings."

The workshop meets each second Thursday. Palmer said a workshop member, Dorothy Lewing, recently had a story, "Who Am I?" published in Inky Trail News.

Visitors are welcome. Workshop motto is "Writers Helping Writers."

Black powder shooting club to organize here

A black powder shooting organizational meeting has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at the American Legion shooting range ( formerly Rockdale Gun Club).

From the Rockdale post office, drive north on FM 487 about 1.8 miles, turn left on FM 1712, go one mile and turn at sign on right. Range is through the gate at the top of the hill.

"Purpose of the meeting is to organize a black powder shooting club for the Rockdale area," said Les W. Davenport, spokesman.

Rockdale Rotary Club meets at noon each Tuesday at the New Salem Clubhouse at Fair Park.

Noon Lions Club

Rockdale Noon Lions Club meets each first and third Wednesday at the Rockdale VFD fire station.

Historical Society

Rockdale Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. each second Tuesday at the I&GN Railroad depot museum downtown. All persons with an interest in local history are invited.

Milam County MOPS

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is enrolling members for the 2009 -2010 year. MOPS is open to any mother with children ages birthkindergarten. Fees $25. Meetings will begin in September at First Baptist Church in Rockdale at 9:30 a.m. the second Wednesday of the month. Breakfast, guest speakers, crafts, fellowship. Childcare provided for 5 and under. Alzheimer's support

Alzheimer's Family Support Group meets in the conference room at Renaissance Villa each first Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m.

VistaCare volunteers

VistaCare Hospice volunteers meet at 11:30 a.m. each third Thursday at Murray Street Church of Christ.
