Drug raid nabs three, nets cash and weapons

Cameron police and t hree Milam County constables arrested two persons on drug charges, and another for interfering with public duties, during a Friday drug raid on a Cameron residence.

One day earlier police in that city arrested a man termed as a "well-known drug dealer" after a foot chase.

Raid

Police and Constables John Anderle, Heith Kemper and Herbie Vaughan, along with drug dog "Char" served a search warrant at 6:45 a.m. Friday on North Orchard Street in Cameron and made three arrests as follows:

• Peter James Sanchez, 30, Cameron, manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance (200 to 400 grams), possession of marijuana (less than 2 ounces) in a drug-free zone, abandoning/ endangering a child criminal negligence, in custody on $90,000 bond.

• Laura Ann Lara, 31, Cameron, possession of a controlled substance (less than one gram) in a drug-free zone, abandoning/ endangering a child criminal negligence, released on $35,000 bond.

• Leticia Ashley Cooper-Lara, 20, Harker Heights, interfering with public duties, released on $1,000 bond.

Police Chief Patrick Guffey said a large quantity of cocaine, marijuana and crystal methamphetamine was found along with cash, pistols and illegal weapons including switchblade knives.

Child Protective Services was called in to take care of children found in the home, he said.

Chase

Three Cameron officers arrested 30-year-old Jermaud Desmond Bennett of Cameron after a foot chase which began at Mike's Convenience Store on Texas 36.

Police termed Bennett "a wellknown drug dealer" and said he was on parole after receiving a 45-year sentence in a drug case in 2001.

Bennett was charged w ith parole violation, escape while arrested/confined and possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone. He is being held without bond.
