Humanitarian effort provides school supplies

Women of the Rockdale area are invited to join in bringing school supplies to areas of the world where those items are otherwise unavailable, either because of poverty or disaster.

Women volunteers will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, hosted by the Women's Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at their building at 310 Calhoun Street in Rockdale.

"We will be making school bags, assembling school kits and making file folder games," said Chanda Sanderson, spokesperson. "Supply donations are accepted, but not required," she said.

Gospel Explosion '09 set here on August 22

Rising Star Baptist Church will present "Gospel Explosion 2009" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 in the Rockdale Junior-High School Commons.

Featured will be Rising Star's Workshop Choir, directed by Richard Hicks, and Rising Star Music Ministry (praise dancers, male chorus, youth choir and combined choir). Guest soloist will be Dr. Vanessa Beaumont, mezzo soprano, of Austin.

Tickets, $10, are available at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, from church members, and will be sold at the door. Proceeds go to the church building fund.

Landmark Baptist sets luncheon for seniors

A special catered luncheon will be held for senior citizens on Monday, Aug. 17 at Landmark Baptist Church. The meal will begin at noon.

Speaker for the event will be Rev. M.T. Blackmon, founding pastor of the Landmark Baptist Church. Rev. Blackmon, 85, is still active in preaching. He will speak on "Recollections of a Long Life."

Rising Star to host Family & Friends Day

Rising Star Baptist Church, 1022 Texas Street, Royal Johnson, pastor, will host its annual Family & Friends Day at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16. Theme will be "Honoring the Past and Embracing the Future."

Special guests will be Pastor Kevin Nelson and congregation from Calvary Baptist Church in San Antonio.

Local pastor begins syndicated radio show

Rev. Rick Hertless, pastor of Meadowbrook Baptist Church, has begun a new syndicated radio program to air in seven states and on the Internet at thegospelword. com.

The name of the half-hour program is "His Gospel Power" and it will be aired once a week. "Purpose is to spread the Gospel of Christ," Rev. Hertless said. Air times and stations are:

Meadowbrook sets garage, bake sale

Meadowbrook Baptist Church, 1401 Colorado (in front of the new high school entrance), invites the public to a fall fund-raiser on Saturday, Sept. 5.

A huge indoor garage sale will be held in the air-conditioned church fellowship hall, along with a bake sale beginning at 7 a.m. Sausage wraps and drinks will also be available.

'Celebrate Recovery' meets each Tuesday

St. Monica's festival coming up Sunday

CAMERON—St. Monica's Catholic Church will hold its homecoming festival Sunday, Aug. 16. Spanish Mass will be at 8 a.m. and Polka Mass at 10:30 a.m.

BBQ beef/sausage plates ($8) will be served to dine-in or takeout beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burgers, tamales and BBQ sandwiches will also be available.

An auction will start at 4 p.m. Bingo and other games are planned. Musical entertainment will feature Zismo Musica Durango of Cameron and Jodie Mikula Orchestra from Ennis.

Homecoming picnic set Aug. 23 at Marak

CAMERON—Ss. Cyris & Methodius Catholic Church in Marak will host its annual homecoming picnic Sunday, Aug. 23 with mass at 10:15 a.m., dinner at 11 a.m. and games at noon.

Home-fried chicken and sausage plates will be served for $8 with all the trimmings, to-go or dinein. The Jodie Mikula Orchestra of Ennis will play from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and an auction will start at 4 p.m. "There will be games, refreshments and entertainment for the entire family," said Janice Marak, publicist.

Women's Bible study set at Meadowbrook

"Esther" will be the topic of a 10-week women's Bible study at Meadowbrook Baptist Church. The night study has been changed from Thursday to Tuesday night.

Beginning dates are Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 9:30 a.m.

Aglow Lighthouse

Rockdale Aglow Community Lighthouse will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at Rockdale General Store, just west of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home.

Guest speaker will be Betty Ballew, lifelong Milam County resident. She and her husband of 46 years, Allen Ballew, were pastors of Church of the Crossroads for 15 years. Their son Kelley and wife Annette now pastor the Salty Church.

St. John's VBS Saturday

St. John's United Methodist Church will host a one-day Family Vacation Bible School on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Theme will be "Moses' Journey: Come and Explore," according to Deborah Bland, spokesperson.

"In addition to a real live walk through Moses' story, children and their parents will play games, make crafts, sing, and have theme-related snacks," she said.

Women on Mission

Women on Mission of First Baptist Church met Aug. 5 for a program presented by Ramona Barlow on Lake Placid, NY which is known as a tiny town with an Olympicsized mission field. The town is where athletes train for the winter Olympics. Sally Brumbelow gave the calendar of prayer for Southern Baptist missionaries.

Others attending were Faye Simpson, Elaine Simpson, Mary Yates, Barbara Clark, Ann Sonntag, Myrtle Love, Mary Lois Morgan and Kaye Hawkins.

Monthly men's breakfast

An ecumenical Christian men's fellowship breakfast is held each second Tuesday from 7 to 8 a.m., the site rotating between several local churches. All men of the Rockdale area are welcome. Next meeting will be Sept. 8 at First Presbyterian Church.
