Teachers will move into the new building to house grades 3-5 on Monday, Aug. 17. The first day of classes is Monday, Aug. 24. It's an exciting time for everyone who has a student in grades 3-5 at the new Rockdale Intermediate School, and a busy time for everyone who teaches there.

The 73,645-square-foot school is being occupied and the public will get to check out the gleaming new structure during an open house/meet the teachers event from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23.

Guided tours of the campus will be available.

Classes begin the next day.

Intermediate office staff began moving into the new building on Monday, Aug. 11, and are working out of their new offices.

Intermediate phone number is 430- 6200.

Teachers begin moving into the new building on Monday, Aug. 17, the same day class lists for 2009-2010 will be posted at the elementary campus. (See box at right.)

Bus rides

Here's how it's going to work. All students in grades 3-5 in the RISD are eligible for bus transportation to and from the new campus.

Bus routes, with times and stops, are available in the offices of all campuses.

Bus riders will enter the gym doors on the eastern side of the new school and will either eat breakfast in the adjacent cafeteria or wait in the gym for dismissal to classes.

Principal Pam Kaufmann said breakfast is from 7:20 to 7:50 a.m.

"All students may enter the building at 7:20," she said. "Please do not drop off students before 7:20 as there will be no one on duty to monitor them."

Car riders

If you bring your child to school, K aufmann said c ar riders and walkers—the RISD hopes there won't be any, that's why there are bus rides—will enter though the front entrance in the center of the school.

"The procedure is the same as for the bus riders," Kaufmann said. "They will either eat breakfast or remain in the gym until dismissal for class."

All students will be dismissed at 3:20 p.m.

"Bus students will wait in the gym until their bus arrives," Kaufmann said.

"All other students will wait in the cafeteria. Parents are asked to use the drive-through lane in front of the school to pick up their students," she added.

CLASS LISTS, OPEN HOUSES

Elementary, intermediate lists

Class lists (rosters) for Rockdale Elementary (Grades K-2) and Rockdale Intermediate (Grades 3-5) will be posted after 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17 on the front door of the elementary campus.

That's right, the elementary campus—the old school on Belton Avenue, not the new one west of town. You'll need to go to the elementary to find out who your student's teacher is even if they're in the new intermediate school.
