'Clunkers' give boost to dealers

Local car dealers are participating in the federal "Cash for Clunkers" program and it has helped move some inventory for Rockdale's GM and Ford dealers.

"It's a great deal for the consumer," said Allan Miller, coowner of Miller-Starnes Chevrolet Buick. "They get either $3,500 or $4,500 and it gets a number of gas guzzlers off the road."

Miller said his dealership has done eight sales under the program and most are opting for smaller cars.

"We give money to the customer up front and the dealer has to get it back from the government," Miller said. "It's quite detailed, but it works. We've been reimbursed on some of them. There's supposed to be a 10-day turnaround and that's about what we've witnessed once our paperwork is completed."

Tranum Ford dealer Bob Graham said he had sold some cars under the program but declined to comment.
