Reporter/ Bill Martin Sophomore Daniel Brooks busts through the line Monday morning at practice. Brooks scored 19 touchdowns for the freshmen last season and will be in the mix for carries this season for the Tigers. Reporter/ Bill Martin Jeff Miller will find out fairly quickly how much progress his Tiger football team has made when they travel to Giddings to take on the state power Buffaloes for their first scrimmage of the summer Saturday.

The va rsit y sk ir mish is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and the junior varsity and freshmen battle at 9 a.m.

Giddings, which used to share a district with Rockdale, is ranked No. 6 in Class 3A in preseason and is coming off an 11-4 season which saw it reach the state semifinals.

The veer-minded Buffaloes return 12 starters (6/6) and will be breaking in a new quarterback in Connor Wehr (6-3, 190) who moved in from Class 4A Magnolia.

Rush Plumblee and Trey Masek—who split time at quarterback last year—chose not to play football this season.

Giddings—which is 45-9 over the past four years—will have to replace Class 3A player of the year Xavier Daniels.

After just four days practicing in pads, Miller hasn't been pleased with the team's lack of aggression.

"We've got to get more aggressive up front on offense and defense," he said. "I've been dis- appointed with how soft we are all across the board.

"If we don't pick it up real soon, we're going to get shocked Saturday.

"Skill-wise we're at a pretty good place and everything else we can fix, but we better get it done pretty soon.

"Giddings is one of the top teams in the state," Miller said. "That's why I wanted to scrimmage them to see where we are."

While the opening day of the regular season is Friday, Aug. 28, when the Tigers will travel to Llano for the 7:30 kickoff, Rockdale has a couple of scrimmages set up before then.

After the trip to Giddings, the Tigers will then host Robinson on Thursday, Aug. 20 for a 7 p.m. scrimmage.

The annual "Meet the Tigers" social and cake auction will take place Monday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. in the junior high gym.

Rockdale is ranked 15th in the state and the favorite to capture the District 24-3A championship.

Nagging

The Tigers have been healthy so far in the early going of twoa days, but some post-season surgeries have kept some players from going full speed.

Senior defensive end Logan David has not been able to participate in any contact drills as he is waiting on a special knee brace after having knee surgery last year.

Starting nose guard Shane Barcak hasn't been able to participate because his shoulder surgery hasn't fully recovered.

Junior defensive back Casey Burrough has also been hampered after having foot surgery after last season.

Senior receiver/linebacker Derek Mynar and senior defensive back J.B. Debault are also recovering from shoulder surgeries.

Changes

Several players will be learning new positions heading into the season.

Because of his shoulder injury, Barcak w ill move from nose guard to linebacker and Debault will move from linebacker to cornerback.

Tyler Wright is shifting from cornerback to safety to take over for Lance Loewe, who chose not to play football this season and concentrate on basketball.
