Lady Tigers remain calm in opener

Spikers record first seasonopening win since 2004

LEXINGTON—Perhaps taking on the demeanor of their new coach Jason Williams, no matter what the circumstances Tuesday night, Rockdale remained calm.

The Lady Tigers got the Williams era off to a flying start Tuesday night, downing Lexington 25-22, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22 at the Kleinschmidt Recreation Center.

The victory marks the first season-opening win for Rockdale since 2004 and only the third in the past 10 years.

The Lady Tigers were 2-25 last season.

Senior Crystal Callas took on the leadership role and turned in an outstanding performance.

Callas maneuvered all over the court and led the Lady Tigers with seven kills, seven serving aces, four blocks and 15 assists.

Perhaps as a sign of things to come, Callas served up an ace for the very first point of the match.

Senior Brittany Frei followed with six kills in the middle of the net along with two aces, while Meagan Frei logged two kills, three aces and two digs.

In the fourth and deciding game, the Lady Tigers stemmed the tide of a Lexington (0-1) comeback after they had constructed a five-point lead, their largest of the evening.

A kill and a serving ace by Krista Phillips, followed by a blocking point from Brittany Frei provided Rockdale with an 18-13 bulge.

However, the Lady Eagles outpointed the Lady Tigers 8-3 and knotted the game at 21-all.

Two straight kills from Brittany Frei and a service winner from Jill Young handed the Lady Tigers the game 25-22 and the match as well.

The junior varsity fell 25-11, 25-13 and the freshmen lost 25- 18, 25-18.
