Construction 'down to the wire' at new Rockdale ISD facilities
When consultants termed the opening of classes Monday at the new Rockdale High School a "photo finish" with the end of construction they weren't kidding. Consultant J.P. Grom this week said the new ceramic tiles under the high school's 42-foot cupola will be cured and ready for use Monday morning. Full Story

A CLOSE CALL Seventy-three-year-old Precinct 3 employee John Culp of Rockdale wriggled out of the wreckage of this pneumatic roller with two broken ribs, numerous bruises and a cut thumb at 11:20 a.m. Thursday on County Road 318, one-half mile from FM 908. "We were blessed, that's the only way to describe it," Precinct 3 Commissioner Dale Jacks said. "When we first saw this we thought the worst." Jaecks said Culp sustained chips on the end of some vertebrae. "The doctors said those will heal," Jaecks said. "He also needed four stitches for the cut on his thumb. The roller went off the road during maintenance work on the county road. AMR ambulance personnel and the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department responded. Culp was flown to Scott & White Hospital, Temple, for treatment. Full Story
Even with job losses, enrollment up slightly
Power plant may move RISD into 'rich district' category for taxes
Almost one year after Alcoa closed its Rockdale smelter there's no decrease in enrollment forecast for the Rockdale ISD, which begins its classes Monday. In fact, the RISD is looking for 1,674 students to begin the 2009- 10 school term, up two from 1,672 last year. Full Story
Fans drive helps 134, school supply drive 241
We have completed our school supply drive and our fan drive and we had such great response for both. For the fans we gave away 134 fans to the elderly and low income. We served 241 students with the school supplies and the ages were from pre-k to high school. Full Story
Tax rebates down all over
One year after record rebate amount, cities, counties, state show sales declines
One year after a record sales tax reimbursement from the state, Rockdale showed a 12- percent decline in year-over-year totals, the State Comptroller's office reported. Rockdale received $75,717, compared to last year's $86,750 rebate. Full Story
Open house at the inn
Comfort Inn held an open house and Chamber of Commerce mixer as part of its grand opening ceremonies last week. Owners Suresh and Nayna Patel welcomed visitors as their staff gave tours of the rooms, which includes four with jacuzzis. Above, Comfort Inn staff and company offi- cials posed for a photo. Tigers host Rockets Thursday
In one final tuneup before the season opener against Llano Sept. 28, the Tigers will host old friend Robinson on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Tiger Field. Robinson is coming off a rare losing season at 4-6, but return eight offensive players and will be searching for a new quarterback. Full Story

Spikers record third win Tuesday against McGregor
A 3-2 record is not exactly setting the world on fire, but for the Rockdale Lady Tigers, it beats where they've been. The Lady Tigers jumped out early and then staved off McGregor 25-13, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19 Tuesday night on the road. Full Story
