Rockdale, Thorndale Chambers set sales

Rockdale and Thorndale Chambers of Commerce will sponsor city-wide garage sale on successive weekends, the organizations announced.

Rockdale's annual event, which draws upwards of 100 sales, will be held Sept. 5, in conjunction with the quarterly Market Day.

Call Denice Doss or Shelly Stautz at 446-2030 to register for the Rockdale sale. Registered sellers will be placed on a map advertising the sales and receive an orange sign advertising their sale.

The Thorndale Chamber's citywide garage sale event will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, beginning at 8 a.m.

Call Country Roads Antiques at 898-2121 or Sarah Lincoln at 898- 2163 to have your sale listed on a city map. You will also receive a yard sign to advertise your garage sale, said Darleen Tucker, Thorndale Chamber spokesperson. Deadline to register for the map is Saturday, Sept. 5.

The Chamber will also hold a bake sale in conjunction with the garage sale, Tucker said.

RVFD, KC Casino Night set Sept. 26 at KC Hall

Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Rockdale Knights of Columbus Council 7014 will host a Casino Night on Sept. 26 at the KC Hall, organizers announced.

Cost is $100 per player ($25 for non-players) and no one under 21 will be admitted. A limited number of pre-sale tickets are available.

Grand prize is $5,000, 2nd prize is $1,000, 3rd is $500, 4th is $300 and 5th is $200.

The night will feature free hors d'oeuvres and an open bar. Doors open at 6 p.m. with games beginning at 7. The night ends at 11 p.m. with an auction.

Demo chair resigns to seek election as JP

CAMERON—Donald Schuerman, who has served as Milam County Democratic chairman has submitted his resignation in order to seek the position as Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, in 2010.

"I intend to file in the Democratic Primary and see that seat," Schuerman said. "I'm resigning now to allow a new county chair adequate time to prepare for the upcoming elections."

Schuerman said the new county chair will be elected by current precinct chairs.

Schuerman was first appointed county party chair in 2003 and was re-elected in 2004, 2006 and 2008.

Thorndale ISD sets tax budget hearing Monday

THORNDALE—The Thorndale ISD has scheduled a public hearing to discuss the district's tax rate and budget for Aug. 24.

The hearing will be held at 8 p.m. at the TISD administration building.

5Kay seeks sponsors, entries for fund-raiser

Directors of the Kay Theater Foundation's annual 5Kay Run, Walk and UnRun are seeking runners and sponsors for the Sept. 26 event, which begins in front of the theater.

Sponsorship deadline is Aug. 30. Runners may download an entry form at www.rockdalereporter. com.

Currently under renovation, the theater will be a community center for a variety of events.

St. Paul's to host S&W blood drive Sunday

THORNDALE—The Scott & White Bloodmobile will return to St. Paul Lutheran School from 8 a.m. to 12-noon Sunday, Aug. 23, according to Teresa Ging, spokesperson.

"Potential donors are asked to start eating iron-rich foods before they donate," she said.

"Scott & White is in need of nearly 1,400 donations each month," Ging said. "Each pint donated can help save the lives of up to two patients."

Ging said those donating a pint of blood receive a baseball theme T-shirt, recyclable grocery bag and a chance to win a pair of Houston Astros tickets. To pre-register call 989-2711 prior to Aug. 20.

Thorndale council okays 08-09 auditor

THORNDALE—City council members in Thorndale, meeting Aug. 12 at City Hall, appointed Michael Warner & Associates to perform the district audit for 2008-09.

In other business, according to City Secretary Denise Melde, council members:

• Agreed to participate in a countywide map project by purchasing 1,000 maps.

• Approved an expenditure of $1,000 for grader repairs.

• Tabled purchase of a new backhoe.

'Experience Works' session set Aug. 27th

Experience Works, a program which assists Texans 55 or older living on limited incomes and seeking employment, has scheduled an interview session Thursday, Aug. 27, in Rockdale.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 12-noon at the Central Texas Workforce Center in the One-Stop Center, Main at Bell.

If applicants qualify, temporary part-time employment can be offered and Experience Works can assist in training and finding a permanent job.
