Milano Alumni group offering scholarships

The Milano Alumni scholarship committee is offering small scholarships for the fall 2009 semester. If you are a Milano graduate and have attended at least two semesters at a college or trade school, you are eligible. Deadline to apply is Sept. 4. The Alumni group has also set its annual homecoming meal and social for Saturday, Sept. 12 at the MHS cafetorium. Ricky Mantey will cater the fajita meal starting at noon. There will also be a silent auction and plans are in the works for a live auction of items as well.

There was a great crowd at the Milano Opry held Saturday night at the high school cafetorium. A new item at the concession stand was homemade pies sold by the slice. All proceeds from the concession stand goes toward the renovation of the Bailey Bank Building in downtown Milano. If you would like to donate a pie for the concession stand at next month's Opry, call Martha Newman at 512-455-2041.

Milano City Council will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25 in the Milano Civic Center.

At the time of this writing my mother-in-law, Norine Lagrone, is a patient at Scott & White in Temple. Please keep her in your prayers.

Milano Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary has set Sept. 24- 26 for its annual garage sale at the Civic Center. Doors will open at 8 a.m. each day. The ladies will start taking donations at the center on Monday, Sept. 21. If you have something to donate, call Caroly n Vinton, 512-455-2364 or Jane Yoakum, 512-446-4110. All support is greatly appreciated.

Great nephew Seth Vinton celebrated his 10th bir thday with a party at his home on Saturday, Aug. 15. Attending from Milano were Buck and Marie Bakken, Bradley and Hannah, and myself. Also cousin Janie Lagrone of Katy came to the party.

Summer has gone by so fast and the school bells will ring loud and clear starting Monday, Aug. 24 for Milano ISD students. School buses will run the same time as last year. If your child has received their updated immunizations over the summer, be sure to send a copy of their shot record to the school. Best of luck to everyone in the 2009- 10 school year.

In sports, the Lady Eagles va rsit y volleyba ll team w ill play in the Leon Tournament on Thursday and Saturday of this week and also hold a trimatch with Granger and Jarrell on Fr iday, Aug. 21. On Aug. 25, all Milano volleyball teams will travel to Rogers for games beginning at 5 p.m.

The Milano Eagles football team will scrimmage in Chilton at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21.

Milano ISD has a great athletic program. Please show the young men and women that our community and school supports them. It means a lot to them and their parents.
