Enrollment figures stop 5-year trend, show slight rise
Build it and they will come. The Rockdale ISD opened 151,224 new square feet of school buildings Monday and reversed a five-year trend of first-day enrollment declines. Despite losing Rockdale's major industry during the past year, the district enrolled 1,677 students on Monday. Full Story
Depot recognized for restoration
The International & Great Northern Railroad Passenger Depot has been named a finalist in the "best restoration" category for the 2009 Texas Downtown Association (TDA) President's Awards Program. Milam jobless numbers hover at 10.7%
More than 1,300 still jobless in Milam; state numbers rise
Milam County's jobless rate dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 10.7 percent in July, the Texas Workforce Commission reported. Milam's rate was based on a labor force of 12,681 with 11,323 working and 1,358 out of work. Full Story
FOUNDATION GRANT
Alcoa workers spent Monday morning cleaning and organizing the Rockdale Christian Services' Heavenly Treasures thrift shop. Thanks to volunteer efforts, RCS earned a $1,500 ACTION grant (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods). The program encourages Alcoa employee engagement and recognizes volunteer efforts of teams of Alcoa employees for non-profit organizations. Lady Tigers falter in first competition in new gym
Spikers host tournament this weekend
Being the first Rockdale team to compete in the new Tiger Gymnasium wasn't enough to inspire the Lady Tiger volleyball team. Rockdale was sacked by Moody 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 25-15 Friday in the new gym's inauguration. "The girls did some good things," said first-year Rockdale Coach Jason Williams.
