Girl Scouts set signup rallies across county

Milam County Girl Scouts will be holding rallies for any girls who would like to sign up to take part Scouting.

The only requirement is that girls need to be in grades K-12.

Rally dates and locations will be as follows:

• Rockdale Girl Scout House, Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.

• Milano Community Center, Wednesday, Sept. 2, 6 to 8 p.m.

* Cameron City Park, Saturday, Sept. 19, 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Milano Jamboree coming up Saturday

MILANO—The monthly Milano Country & Gospel Jamboree, sponsored by the Milano Senior Citizens, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Milano Civic Center. Tina Galbreath, publicist, said all listeners and musicians are invited and admission is free. Refreshments will be available.

Hospital auxiliary to meet Wednesday

After taking the summer off, Richards Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will once again hold monthly meetings beginning at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 2 in the hospital cafeteria.

"This will be a brown bag luncheon meeting," said Sue Ohlswager, president. "Agenda items include an update to members on projects completed during the summer, fall and Christmas fundraisers, and introduction of new members.

"The Auxiliary welcomes those out in the community who would like to join us by having interested persons stop by the hospital and fill out an application and return it to Melissa Tackett, marketing manager at the hospital," Ohlswager said.

The Auxiliary is a volunteer organization dedicated to serving patients and their families and hospital staff, she added.

Annual La Escuelita cookoff set Sept. 12

The eighth annual La Escuelitabenefi t Menudo, Chili and Beans Cookoff has been scheduled Saturday, Sept. 12 at the La Escuelita grounds, east of the Rockdale KC Hall just off US 79.

Cookers can set up at 7 a.m. and the cookoff will start at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $15 per category.

Horseshoe and washer tournaments will start at noon with $10 entry fees per team. DJ music will be by Manuel Garcia.

Food sale will start at 11 a.m.: brisket tacos, sausage wraps, nachos, Frito pie, Fedio, $2 each; pickles, sodas and water, $1 each. Arts, crafts and vendor booths will be $10 per space (no food vendors and no glass containers allowed).

New Al-anon group to meet Thursdays

There will be a new Al-anon group meeting at 7 p.m. Thursdays, starting after Labor Day, at Rockdale Christian Church, located on the corner of Sager and Rockdale Road.

For more than 55 years, Al-Anon has been offering strength and hope for friends and families of problem drinkers. It is estimated that each alcoholic affects the lives of at least four other people.

"Alcoholism is truly a family disease. No matter what relationship you have with an alcoholic, whether they are still drinking or not, all who have been affected by someone else's drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon fellowship," a spokesman said.

Masons to sell fish fry plates on September 12

THORNDALE—Masonic Lodge 978 A.F. & A.M. will serve fried fish plates with all the trimmings Saturday, Sept. 12. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until sold out. Location is Rodenbeck Farm & Ranch on US 79 in Thorndale.

Cost is $ 8. Plates will be to-go, with limited seating for dine-in. Homemade desserts will also be available.

Milam Retired Teachers to meet September 3

Milam County Retired Teachers Association will hold its first meeting of the school year at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 at Citizens National Bank in downtown Rockdale.

Flu shots will be administered at the meeting, rather than at the October meeting, according to Carolyn Hafley, secretary. There is no charge for Medicare card holders. Otherwise, the fee is $20, she said.

Sharon Wishnew, association member benefits advisor, will present the program. "All members are encouraged to attend and bring prospective members," Hafley said.

Linwood Garden Club next meeting set Sept. 9

Linwood Acres Garden Club will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the historic home of Carole Simank in San Gabriel. Co-hostesses will be Johnnilyn Brown and Marie Freiling. Coffee and refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m., followed by the program at 10.

Melba Caffey will present a program on "The History of LAGC." The business meeting will commence at 10:30 a.m. All members are encouraged to attend as yearbooks will be distributed and reviewed.

Yard-of-the-month judges for September are Jeanette Hudson and Joy Reagan. Linwood Acres Garden Club recognizes outstanding residential yards or commercial landscaping in the Rockdale area on the basis of plantings, maintenance, eye appeal, and use of color or yard sculpture. Yards may be nominated by calling the Chamber of Commerce, 446-2030. Any home or business in the Rockdale area is eligible to be nominated.—Dr. Ann Dyer, publicity

Sunshine quilters to meet Thursday

Sunshine n' Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church fellowship hall.
