CAMERON—Memorial services for Rita Greenwood, 79, of Walkamin, Queensland, Australia, formerly of Cameron, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Cameron.
Mrs. Greenwood died Monday, Aug. 17, in Walkamin.
She was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Cameron to Frank and Rosina Kunz Hanel.
She married Lawrence Greenwood on Aug. 25, 1952.
Mrs. Greenwood had worked as a teller at First National Bank in Cameron and also at a bank in Ashdown, Arkansas.
In January 1969, she moved to Australia with her husband and their sons, along with members of the Greenwood family.
Mrs. Greenwood later wrote a book, I Can't is a Coward, I Can is a King, about her experiences in Australia from 1969 to 1985. It was based on the many letters sent back to her mother in America.
Mrs. Greenwood was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Anton, George and Herman Hanel.
Survivors are her husband, Lawrence Greenwood; three sons, Larry and wife Colleen, Raymond and wife Kaylene, Bill and wife Pim; a brother, Clarence Hanel; and four sisters, Imelda Peschel, Dosithea Hobizal, Joan Gallup and Anna Marie Jetter; also, eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
