City adopts tax hike, $6.3-million budget
Bond sale approved for street improvements
City council members on Monday voted 4-1 to adopt a $6,385,032 budget for fiscal 2010. Also adopted was a 3- cent tax hike to cover expenditures. Councilman J.T. Talley voted against the tax hike, but for the budget, saying he was "surprised" by spending increases. The council had held workshops and two public hearings beforehand. Full Story
Drug suspect dies in motorcycle wreck
A 53-year-old Cameron man, whose home had been raided by police Friday in a drug raid, died that night in a motorcycle crash on a remote country road. Antonio Vargas Sr., was killed at the County Road 455-458A intersection, five miles south of Thorndale, when his motorcycle ran through a fence and struck a tree, according to DPS Trooper Erik Gaston. Indoor pot farm raided south of town
A 43-year-old Praesel Addition resident was arrested last week after a monthlong investigation by the Milam County Sheriff's Department and charged with felony possession of marijuana. Wesley Treadwell was also charged with possession of a controlled substance. Full Story

About 500 people attended Rockdale's first jaripeo, a Mexican rodeo with bull riding and music, on Saturday at the Fair Park rodeo arena. The rodeo is in the style of cowboys from the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi and featured riders and horsemen from throughout Central Texas.
