CONGRESSMAN VISITS ROCKDALE
Congressman John Carter (R-Round Rock) at right stopped at Rockdale's Fair Park last Wednesday en route to a political rally in Cameron and was greeted by several local residents including Skeet Quinney. Carter fielded several questions and expressed his opposition to the health care reforms being proposed by the Obama Administration. Carter was joined at the Cameron rally by State Rep. Dan Gattis. County pay freeze sought during tax hearing
CAMERON—A frequent critic of county government attended Thursday's first public hearing on the county's tax rate and presented a list of 10 "issues of concern." Wayne Horkheimer proposed a freeze on pay increases for all employees, asked the tax rate be lowered from 62 to 59 cents and questioned the need for new county positions in the budget. Full Story

Three treated after accidents
Three persons were treated at Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale after south Milam County traffic accidents during the past week, according to state troopers. Amos Payne, 73, of Palestine was hurt when his vehicle ran off US 79 in Gause at 9:26 a.m. Sunday, according to Trooper Erik Gaston. Full Story
Choose a safe ride during the Labor Day weekend
DPS wants drivers and passengers to make the wise, and least expensive choice, of finding a sober ride to their destinations during the Labor Day weekend. All available troopers will be on duty starting Friday, Sept. 4, through midnight, Monday, Sept. 7, looking for drunk drivers, speeders and seat belt violators. Full Story

20,000 BUCKS That's the amount of this donation by the Alcoa Foundation to the Rockdale ISD to be used in the district's science curriculum. The donation, made Monday in a new Rockdale Junior-High School science lab, is the second in a two-year series. An identical $20,000 donation was made last year. Reporter file photo SCOUT TIME—Rockdale Boy Scouts are beginning their year of activities and achievements. The annual Pack 789 Roundup meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at the new intermediate school. Also, Pack 789 will be at Walmart on Saturday selling popcorn for a fund-raiser. The organization is challenged this year by a lack of state organization aid and none from the local United Way, which has had to curb its donations. Education, communication key with H1N1 virus
MILAM COUNTY HEALTH
During the week of Aug. 17, I attended the International Swine Flu Conference in Washington, D.C. It was a very informative conference in regards to all of the public health issues regarding the Swine H1N1 flu. There were representatives from 37 foreign countries and many U.S. states. This conference was broadcast live on C-Span. Full Story
