Annual La Escuelita cookoff cancelled
The eighth annual La Escuelitabenefi t Menudo, Chili and Beans Cookoff which was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12 has been cancelled because of a family illness that has impacted much of the planning committee, according to Johnnie Diaz, publicist.
Alcoa retirees will meet September 10
Alcoa retirees and spouses will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Rockdale KC Hall, according to LaNell Spence, publicist.
A catered fish and chicken meal will be served, priced at $7 per plate.
"Members whose last names start with M through Z are asked to bring a dessert. All members are asked to bring an item for the silent auction (not a gift item)," Spence said.
New Al-anon group to meet Thursdays
There will be a new Al-anon group meeting at 7 p.m. Thursdays at Rockdale Christian Church, located on the corner of Sager and Rockdale Road.
For more than 55 years, Al-Anon has been offering strength and hope for friends and families of problem drinkers. It is estimated that each alcoholic affects the lives of at least four other people.
"Alcoholism is truly a family disease. No matter what relationship you have with an alcoholic, whether they are still drinking or not, all who have been affected by someone else's drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon fellowship," a spokesman said.

Masons to sell fish fry plates on September 12
THORNDALE—Masonic Lodge 978 A.F. & A.M. will serve fried fish plates with all the trimmings Saturday, Sept. 12. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until sold out. Location is Rodenbeck Farm & Ranch on US 79 in Thorndale.
Cost is $ 8. Plates will be to-go, with limited seating for dine-in. Homemade desserts will also be available.
Milam Retired Teachers to meet here Thursday
Milam County Retired Teachers Association will hold its first meeting of the school year at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 at Citizens National Bank in downtown Rockdale.
Flu shots will be administered at the meeting, rather than at the October meeting, according to Carolyn Hafley, secretary. There is no charge for Medicare card holders. Otherwise, the fee is $20, she said.
Sharon Wishnew, association member benefits advisor, will present the program. "All members are encouraged to attend and bring prospective members," Hafley said.
Murray Cemetery Assn. to meet September 19
Murray Cemetery Association will hold its sixth annual meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 in the fellowship hall of Peace Lutheran Church, 303 Meadow Drive in Rockdale.
A covered dish luncheon will follow the business meeting. Attendees are asked to bring a favorite dish. Ice tea, coffee, bread and utensils will be provided.
Persons unable to attend but wishing to send a donation are asked to mail it to Murray Cemetery Association, PO Box 3, Rockdale TX 76567.
"In the last six years, much has been accomplished to restore and beautify the cemetery," said Shirley McIrvin, secretary. "Several more projects are planned and new members are sought to help facilitate these."
All persons having relatives interred in the cemetery or those with an interest in the cemetery are urged to attend the meeting.

MOPS to meet here Sept. 9 morning
Milam County MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is enrolling members now for the 2009-10 school year, according to an announcement by Sarah Batten.
First meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 9. Meetings are held September through May at 9:30 a.m. each second Wednesday at First Baptist Church and last for two hours.
"There is an annual fee of $50," Batten said, "and it can be paid all at once or in two installments of $25. Scholarships and payment plans are available, and any mom unable to attend meetings may join for the initial fee of $25 and receive all benefits provided by MOPS International." Those include: subscription to MomSense magazine; "Life on Planet Mom" book; weekly MOM-Email; local MOPS meetings and events; free childcare during meetings; free breakfast.
Minerva Center annual meeting September 14
Minerva Community Center will hold its annual business meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. In addition to the regular business meeting, a new trustee will be elected.
