GREAT marks its 10th year of computer access

The cool breezes that have made their way into our area are not only refreshing but encouraging and a nice break from the oppressive heat that we have had this summer. Only in Texas would we feel like 90 degree days would be a respite from the heat.

I sat on my back porch much of Sunday and dozed, read and just generally enjoyed the day. As fast paced a life as we all live, it was quite a nice break to just be still. I had a lot to do but I know those chores will be there when I get back to them.

Garage sale/Market Day

This is the big week for the Community Wide Garage Sale and I know we will find lots of bargains all over town. Also with the Market Day it should be a great shopping day.

Fly your flag

On Friday, Sept. 11, why don't you fly an American flag outside your home, apartment or office? This is the eighth anniversary of one of our country's worst tragedies.

In doing this we will honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

GREAT 10th year

A member of the Chamber that I would like to talk about this week is the Greater Rockdale E-Access Team or GREAT. It will soon be celebrating its 10th anniversary, providing public access computers to the Rockdale community.

Through the years GREAT has sponsored computer classes and trained thousands of people on different computer programs, rosetta stone is available to learn Spanish at your own pace, and recently GED has been added to the services GREAT provides to help people better educate themselves.

Through the efforts of the GREAT committee many accomplishments have been made through those 10 years. It is a wonderful organization to have in Rockdale.

There are 13 public access locations around the town and include the Workforce, the Library, the Chamber, City Hall, and a number of other locations.
