Junior varsity salvages tie with Yellowjackets on game's last play

THURSDAY: The junior varsity and freshmen Tigers travel to Lampasas with the first game beginning at 5 p.m. The junior high Tigers host Marlin Sept. 10 with the first game starting at 4:30 p.m.

Junior varsity

Miguel Alonzo scored on the final play of the game with the help of a great block from running back Rakeem Wyatt to preserve a 16-16 tie with Llano in the 2009 season opener.

The Tigers tied the game twice.

After the Yellowjackets jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a short run in the second quarter, Anthony Fisher scored from seven yards out and Alonzo converted the two-point play for an 8-8 game.

Llano surged ahead in the fourth quarter on another short run before Alonzo's last-second score and pass to Dillon Goodman to tie the game.

According to coaches, offensive standouts were Fisher, Alonzo, Desmond Davis and Ray Hernandez.

The defensive leaders were Stephen Schneider, Ty Kirk, Zach Garza and Brandon Wright.

Freshmen

After jumping out to an early lead, the Tiger freshmen couldn't hold on in a 36-21 opening game loss to Llano.

Juan Hernandez broke free for a 40-yard touchdown sprint to tie the game at 8-8 in the first quarter, followed by Markus Hayes' 1-yard markoff to push the Tigers into the lead 15-8.

However, the Yellowjackets grabbed the lead for good on two touchdown runs and were ahead 22-15 at intermission.

Rockdale immediately closed the gap after halftime as Josh Frei took in a pass from Ethan Brinkley to make it 22-21.

The Tigers would not score again, while Llano crossed the goal line two more times for the victory.

According to coaches, standouts were Kentrae Davis, Nick Gonzales, Markus Hayes and Andrew Jenkins.
