Sandow 5 completion just a matter of days
The transfer of 581-megawatt Sandow Power Plant Unit 5 from building Bechtol-Becon to owneroperator Luminant is just a matter of days away.
Andy Broussard, Bechtol project manager said the company continues to "strive to complete the plant and declare substantial completion before Monday, Sept. 14."
"We are targeting the 12th to the 13th," he said.
Broussard said there will be no formal ceremony to mark the changeover and declare the project substantially complete.
"It's all done with letters," he said.
Only one 100 as area survives 'hottest' week
The week in which August transitions into September is traditionally one of the hottest, if not the hottest, week of the summer in Rockdale.
Not so in 2009.
There was only one reading of 100 degrees or higher during the week—Thursday's 102—and the other highs were downright mild compared to the rest of the scorching summer.
Other highs were 94, 98, 93, 91 (with a .35-inch rain), 96 and 98.
Between Aug. 31 and Sept. 6, 2000, Rockdale recorded its six hottest temperatures ever, an all-time high of 113, two 112s and three 110s.
There have now been 61 days with highs of 100 or more in 2009, an a ll-t ime Rockda le record.
Cub Scout Pack sets Roundup for Thursday
Rockdale Cub Scout Pack 789 will hold its annual Roundup at 7 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 10) at the new Rockdale Intermediate School.
Jesse Smith, Scout spokesman, said Pack 789 has begun its annual popcorn sales and will sell popcorn at Walmart each Saturday in September.
"The pack is raising money to support its various activities," he said.
RVFD, KC Casino Night set Sept. 26 at KC Hall
Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Rockdale Knights of Columbus Council 7014 will host a Casino Night on Sept. 26 at the KC Hall, organizers announced.
Cost is $100 per player ($25 for non-players) and no one under 21 will be admitted. A limited number of pre-sale tickets are available.
Grand prize is $5,000, 2nd prize is $1,000, 3rd is $500, 4th is $300 and 5th is $200.
The night will feature free hors d'oeuvres and an open bar. Doors open at 6 p.m. with games beginning at 7. The night ends at 11 p.m. with an auction.

County ready for vote on budget, tax rate
CAMERON—Milam County commissioners will vote on their proposed 61-cent tax rate during their regular monthly meeting Monday in the commissioners courtroom.
The session will be preceded by a public hearing on the proposed 2009-2010 budget at 9:45 a.m.
That will be followed by the commissioners' regular monthly session at 10 a.m.
The proposed 61-cent rate is down one cent from the current 62 cents but some property owners will see increases because of an increase in valuations.
Hammack memorial fund-raiser Saturday
The second annual Billy Hammack Memorial Benefit will be held Sept. 12 with two separate events. Proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association.
A golf tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 12-noon at Rockdale Country Club. There is a $75 entry fee.
That evening, a dance will be held at The Ranch, featuring Chris Brade.

Rockdale ISD records Obama speech for use
The Rockdale ISD recorded President Barack Obama's speech to school children Monday for classroom use.
The speech had generated some controversy nationwide.
"We're going to use it in our history and social studies classes," Supt. Dr Howell Wright said.
Line flushing ahead September 16 and 17
The monthly water line flushing by Rockdale city crews has been scheduled for the middle of next week, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.
Flushing on the east side of Rockdale (east of Wilcox) will be after midnight Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Flushing on the west side (west of Wilcox) will be after midnight Thursday, Sept. 16, according to Knauf.
"Please run your cold water taps a few minutes the next morning to clear out any sediment left in the lines after the flushing," he said.
