US 79 loop dropped from TxDOT's 'to do soon' list
Money to be reimbursed to county for aquisitions; stimulus never factored into project
Surprising absolutely nobody, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) admitted last week it has dropped the Rockdale US 79 Loop from its list of "near future" projects. TxDOT is reimbursing $200,000 to Milam County, part of an agreement the county had to eventually provide $512,000 as its share of the project. Full Story

Split trustee votes assure baseball field improvements
A pair of split votes by Rockdale ISD trustees Thursday assured a major upgrade of baseball facilities at the RHS diamond. Board members voted 4-2-1 to accept the improvements package and 4-3 to hire Bartlett-Cocke General Contractors of San Antonio as construction manager at risk for the project, expected to cost at least $750,000. September sales tax rebates down for most
Local refund from state down almost 18% for month, but only 1.6% for the year
Sales tax rebates for most local taxing entities were down for the month of September, the Texas Comptroller's office reported. City of Rockdale's rebate declined 17.9 percent from a year ago, a drop due in large part to the absence of temporary workers who were in town constructing Luminant's Sandow 5 power plant. Full Story
ATOMIZER RECOGNIZED
The plant and commercial teams in Alcoa's Rockdale Atomizer Plant were awarded a letter of recognition for completion of the last lot of Alcoa aluminum powder for the current Reusable Solid Rocket Motor as well as being the sole supplier since 1992. The last space shuttle launch, scheduled to fly in late 2010, will be powered by propellant made with Alcoa aluminum powder. Alcoa has been a supplier since 1982 and will continue to provide aluminum powder in the next generation space shuttle. The letter also said that ATK Thiokol wanted "to commend and recognize Alcoa employees and management team in completing this significant mission." Full Story
