HANG 'EM UP The signs are up and Rockdale police are now enforcing the state's new law prohibiting cell phone use in school zones. Here's the way it works. Drivers who talk on "non hands-free" cell phones during specified school rush hours are subject to tickets and fines up to $200 for each incident. Police Chief Thomas Harris said it's okay to pull over and park to use cell phones but be aware of parking restrictions around campuses. The law does not apply to persons using hands-free cell phones with ear buds or headphones. Cell phone use is still okay in the areas during hours not listed on the signs, he said. DECADE OF 'GREAT-NESS'
DECADE OF 'GREAT-NESS' Organizers and par ticipants of Rockdale's technology consortium, the Greater Rockdale EAccess Team (GREAT), held a party Monday at the Workforce Center to mark 10 years of offering computer education and internet access. With the help of grant funding, GREAT placed public-access computers at 15 locations around town. Director Denice Doss (above) said the consortium has helped teach 8,000 computer classes and now offers G.E.D. courses. Call 446-6440 for info. Full Story

Part of the fourth annual Kay Theatre 5K Fun Run Saturday was musical accompaniment provided by the Communities in Concert Band, which provides entertainmment for a variety of community activities each year. At the Kay Theatre run there was even a "call to the post" summons before each race by band member Lee "Sparky" Thomason. Full Story

LOW TECH 1, HIGH TECH 0 For many years it housed Rockdale High School's technology department and art department. It came down in one afternoon last week, the final "piece of the puzzle" in the renovated expanded Rockdale High School. Technology and art are now inside the high school. All of RHS is now either new or has a "new look." Outside walls in the 1950's-era building have received new windows and have been incorporated into the new design. The many portable buildings in the RISD have been sold and moved off site. Full Story
Council calls special election Jan. 9 to fill unexpired term
Rockdale cit y council met briefly Monday to call a special election for Jan. 9, 2010 to fill the unexpired term of west-ward councilman Griffin Rogers. Rogers was removed from the council after a delinquent tax notice was filed on a business he ran. Rogers said the matter was cleared up before he was removed but did not want to fight the measure. Rockdale, Cameron tire collections set
Milam County will sponsor two free tire collections in October. Rockdale's is 8 a.m. to 12- noon Oct. 10 at the Precinct 4 County Barn at the north end of Ackerman. Cameron's is 8 a.m. to 12-noon Oct. 3 at the Precinct 2 County Barn on US 77. Full Story
County requests H1N1 vaccine for clinics
The Milam County Health Department has formally put in a request for H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine and will schedule free flu shot clinics once the long-awaited vaccine arrives. Shots will be free when provided by the health department, according to Michelle Ferguson, public health preparedness coordinator for the county health department. Full Story

Directors for the 2010 South Milam County United Way have set a goal of $50,000 for the 2010 year. Raymon Puente will serve as president. SMCUW has served up to 22 different non-profit agencies, providing over $100,000 in recent years. Full Story
