Milano Opry Saturday in MHS auditorium
MILANO—The monthly Milano Opry will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 (doors open at 6 p.m.) at the Milano High School auditorium.
Headliners will be sisters Minnie and Ella Jordan of Elgin, 7 and 9-year-old fiddlers. Other special guests w ill be Bobby Mikulin of Deanville, Becky Towslee of Caldwell and Dalinda Davis of Somerville.
Other vocalists will include house band members Lynn Martin, Glenn Schneider, Larry Rochelle and Will Fountain.
Cost of the show is $4 and $3 for senior citizens (children age 10-and-under free). Homemade sandwiches and homemade pies will be for sale at the concession stand. For information call Lynn Martin at 979-209-4563.
Eastern Star sets chili fund-raiser for Nov. 7
Rockda le Chapter No. 25 , Order of the Eastern Star, will hold a chili supper as a scholarship fund-raiser on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Masonic Lodge No. 414 AF&AM building, 789 North US 77.
Serving will be from 4 until 8 p.m., priced at $6 adults and $4 for children under age 12. Desserts will be sold separately.
Relay For Life meeting set here for Monday
Relay For Life of Rockdale will hold its monthly committee meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19 at the Hogan-Hall Building next to the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, according to Marie Bakken, communications chair.

KCs to host Fall Festival October 30
The Rockdale Knights of Columbus will host a free community Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 30 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the KC Hall.

Hospital Auxiliary sets luncheon/auction event
Richards Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will hold a Christmas luncheon and silent auction from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2 at St. John's United Methodist Church fellowship hall.
This will be the Auxiliary's main fund-raiser for the year. Tickets for the hot lunch are $10 each and can be purchased at the hospital's front desk or from an Auxiliary member.
Donations of gently used and new items for the silent auction will be welcomed. To make a donation, call Sue Ohlswager, Auxiliary president, at 446- 2282.
All Auxiliary proceeds from fund-raisers are used in support of the hospital. Most recent Auxiliary purchase was "The Buckle Bear Hand Puppet" where the hospital's Education Coordinator will go into Milam County schools and teach students about the importance of safety.
The RMH Auxiliary welcomes new members. If interested, fill out an application that can be found by the time clock at the hospital and return it to Melissa Tackett, the hospital's public relations manager.
Girl Scouts still taking applications
It's not too late to fill out an application for Rockdale's Girl Scouts. The group meets at the Rockdale Girl Scout House, located at 412 Murray, according to service unit director Heather Bartley.
Daisy meetings for girls in kindergarten and first grade are 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays with leader Donna Craig.
Brownie meetings for second and third-grade girls are 5:30- 6:30 p.m. Mondays with leader Dominique Garza.
Junior meetings for fourth, fifth and sixth-grade girls are from 7-8 p.m. on Thursdays with leader Laura Zoeller.
The group is accepting applications all year long for Girl Scouts and those interested in being adult leaders. Registration fee is $12.

Sunshine quilters to meet October 22
Sunshine 'n Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church fellowship hall, according to Eddie Davidson, spokesperson. "Members will work on their own projects and visitors are welcome," she said.
Republican women to meet here Oct. 27
Milam Count y Republican Women w ill meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 in the Citizens National Bank meeting room in Rockdale, Gaye Bland, publicist, has announced.
"We will have several speakers including Jon McClellan, representing Governor Rick Perry, and state representative candidates Stephen Thomas and Milton Rister," Bland said.
She reminded that $25 dues for 2010 are now due.
Milam RTA hears Texas director speak
Milam County Retired Teachers Association met Oct. 1 at Bea's Kitchen in Cameron with Elizabeth Holloway presiding.
Geri Burnett introduced Tim Lee, Texas RTA executive director, who gave an update on legislative issues. He reported no progress on a supplemental paycheck for the state's retired teachers but that the Attorney General can still rule in favor of the issue. He said 4,000 e-mails were sent to his office supporting the supplement.
Lee said there are 280,000 retirees but only 70,000 belong to the Texas RTA. He urged recruiting members to increase influence in Austin.
He also said active teachers need to now there are grants available for schools through the Texas RTA.
Minutes and treasurer reports were approved. Sandra O'Donnell said reminders have been sent to members who still owe dues. Ethel Marak reported 30 people received flus hots at the September meeting, 4 more than a year ago. She said the swine flu (H1N1) immunization will not be a high priority for senior citizens but will target young children who are more susceptible.
Next Milam County RTA meeting will be Nov. 5 at Peace Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Rockdale for the annual Thanksgiving covered dish luncheon. Jamie Larson volunteered to cook a turkey and Elizabeth Holloway will take care of the dressing. Door prizes were awarded.—Carolyn Hafley, secretary
Wheelock Pioneer Days event Oct. 24
WHEELOCK—The Wheelock Civic Association will sponsor the 8th annual Wheelock Pioneer Days from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Bloodworth Center on Hwy 46 in Wheelock.
More than 40 vendors will display arts and crafts. A drawing for prizes will be offered. Entertainment will include the Aggie Wranglers, Lil' Wranglers, mock old-west gunfights by the Brazos Valley Desperados every hour, commercial exhibits, an antique and muscle car show, and an auction.

Milano Exes cruise signup deadline near
MILANO—A seven-day Carnival Alaskan Cruise starting July 27, 2010 will help the Milano Ex-Students Association raise scholarship funds, according to Crystal Denman, organizer.
The cruise leaves from Seattle, WA w ith stops at Tracy Arm Fjord, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, BC. Prices per person are from $996 for an interior cabin to $1,486 for a balcony cabin.
