Perfect weather, better-than-expected auction highlights 34th annual biggest event
About the only thing more perfect than the 34th Rockdale Fair's livestock auction sale over the weekend was the weather. The sale raised $189,934.70 for Milam County's FFA and 4-H youth despite the complete shutdown of Alcoa's Rockdale Operations smelter and the ending of Sandow 5 power plant construction during the year. Pump failure blamed for boil water alert
Tempers rose as water pressure fell last week, causing a 24-hour boil water alert for the entire town. Service was back to normal by 2 p.m. Thursday, once a water sample from the city got the okay from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. A pump failure was the cause. Full Story
Fair volunteers pull off another great event
Coming off of the Rockdale Fair Week I know many of us are feeling the tired. But it is a good tired because it was a great week. I won two reserve grand champions and one grand champion on my projects in the Home Economics Division— what fun! AUCTION ACTION
Though many feared this year's Rockdale Fair Livestock Auction would suffer one year after massive area layoffs, buyer's stepped up and bid local animals up to roughly $190,000, just down from last year's total of $196,000. This year's buyers' dinner, sponsored by the Rockdale Fair Association, drew buyers as large as Luminant to several independent business persons. Full Story

While pondering that I will never eat barbecue again after this weekend's fair and watching the high pressure college football rivalry games through the smoke along barbecue row, it occurred to me that there have been few coaches that have graduated from Rockdale that have returned to coach here.
