Fair's over, but time to dig back into activities

Milam County 4-H Council and Leader Parent meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bea's Kitchen in Cameron.

The Council & Leaders and Parents meeting is for all officers, voting delegates from the clubs and other 4-H'ers 12 years and older and meeting is open to all club managers, leaders and parents interested in the 4-H program. Activities for October include pumpkin carving and dress up in your Halloween costume!

Sunday, Nov. 8 is more than a

4-H Awards Banquet — it is a celebration of 4-H'ers going the extra mile to make a difference. It will be an awesome evening as we recognize 4-H members, leaders and sponsors for their outstanding accomplishments.

All 4-H families are invited to attend. A potluck meal will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the awards presentations. Families are all asked to bring their favorite meat, vegetable and dessert to add to the supper. This event is open to all family members, please bring enough food to feed those extra that you invite.

The Holid ay Gi Exchange is scheduled for 6:30- 8:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at Bea's Kitchen in Cameron. The public is invited to attend and see great craft, decorating and food ideas for the holidays.

4-H'ers can demonstrate craft and decorating ideas or make holiday recipes for the refreshments. When you sign-up to present at the event, you will demonstrate your idea and also provide a sample for a door prize. Your ideas can be for any of the holidays.

This is a great opportunity for you to share ideas with others and learn new ideas. If you have an idea to share, you need to submit directions (step-by-step) and patterns or recipes to Milam County Extension Office by Nov. 13. There is a limit of 2 items per person. If you have questions, call the Extension Office.

Step out of the box and try something new for community service. Cameron and Rockdale Food Banks need your help! How can you help? Every other month we will select a couple of items for you to donate. At the end of those months we will donate those items to the local food banks.

You can also help by unloading donations at the food banks. Contact the Extension Office for additional information.

October/November items to donate: pasta, peanut butter, canned green beans, canned pumpkin. Turn in items at your club meeting the Extension Office.

This year's National 4-H Conference will be held March 20-25, 2010 at the National 4-H Conference Center in Maryland.

Youth can apply on 4-H Connect through Nov. 15. Youth who can apply must be a Senior 4-H ages 15 (as of Jan. 1, 2010) to 18. Cost of the conference is around $1,500 which will include lodging, airfare, meals and transportation. For more details contact the extension office.

The 4-H Conference Center will hold the Texas 4-H Junior Leadership Retreat on Nov. 6-8 at Lake Brownwood.

This workshop will focus on basics such as communication skills, leadership, team building, new 4-H projects, community service, types of recreation, managing groups and more. It is the goal of the workshop to empower youth with the skills they need to become leaders in their community clubs and county programs.

Texas 4-H Council members will provide leadership for this retreat, mentoring to the younger 4-H members to help them develop their leadership skills.

Participants must be under 14 years of age. Junior Leadership Retreat 2009 will focus on two new 4-H opportunities, the Food Challenge and the Outdoor Challenge.

Come learn what it takes to put teams together for these two new and exciting 4-H activities. You'll learn not only about the competitions, but the preparation that it takes to get ready for the events.

Call the county extension office at 254-697-7045 to register today. Cost for the weekend retreat is $120 for youth and $80 per adult chaperone. County registration deadline is Oct. 12.

Though the Rockdale Fair has just ended, it's not too early to begin thinking about the Milam Count y Junior Livestock Show, set for March 25-27.

The show rules are now available. Check them out on the Milam County Extension website at http://milam-tx.tamu.edu.

Entry nights will be held in February 2010 in the Cameron, Rockdale, and Thorndale areas. Dates will be announced at a later time. All entries must be received by the show secretary no later than, Feb. 26.

The following are important dates to remember:

Nov. 1—Beef Heifers non-registered must be tagged by Nov. 1. Contact steer superintendent.

Nov. 23—Market lambs, goats, non-registered breeding meat goats tag-in, Youth Expo Building, 5-7 p.m. (subject to change).

Dec. 7—Market hogs and breeding gilts tag-in, Youth Expo Building, 5-7 p.m.

Dec. 2—Market broiler orders due.

Feb. 18—Market bunnies will be tattooed, Youth Expo Building, 5-7 p.m.
