Sherrill

Services for Avery Ray "Hooter" Sherrill, 85, of Blue were held Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Blue United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary McManus and Rev. Linda O'Neil of Blue United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Burns Cemetery at Blue.

Mr. Sherrill died Wednesday, Oct. 28, in an Austin hospital.

He was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Blue to Avery Aaron and Nellie Ann (Turner) Sherrill.

He married Johnnie Lay on Nov. 21, 1955, in Cameron.

Mr. Sherrill was a millwright with Alcoa's Rockdale Operations from 1957 to 1979.

He lived most of his life in Blue and was a member of Blue United Methodist Church.

Mr. Sherrill was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army infantry.

He was a member of Post Oak Island Masonic Lodge No. 181 AF&AM in Beaukiss.

Mr. Sherrill was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Sherrill on Sept. 20, 2008; a son, Dalton Ray Sherrill; two grandsons, Adam Ryan Sherrill and Seth Michael Sherrill Hannigan; three brothers, Garland, Ross and B.B. Sherrill; three sisters, Ethel Baker, Glendine Coolage and Ermanell Wright; and his parents.

Survivors are four sons, Robert Sherrill and wife Brenda of Jewett, Billy Sherrill and wife Kathie of Beaukiss, Randy Sherrill of Lexington, David Sherrill and wife Bonnie of Blue; four daughters, Doris Phillips and husband Buford of San Antonio, Jo Nell Sparrow and Garry Conner of Buda, Marilyn Hannigan and husband Michael of Lexington, Judy Blue and Jonesy Jones of Blue; and a daughter-in-law, Debbie Sherrill of Bellville; also, 21 grandchildren and 23 greatgrandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons Josh Blue, Gabriel Blue, Miles Hannigan, Johnathon Ross Sherrill, Scott Sherrill, Jason Sherrill, Steve Sherrill, Garrett Sherrill, Micky Phillips, Greg Phillips, Mark Phillips and Mathew Sherrill.

Honorary pallbearers were Aver y Wright, Gar y Sherrill, Larry Wright, Sammy Sherrill and Roddy Wayne Holcombe.
