Reporter/Bill Martin It's been almost 20 years since Rockdale hosted a holiday basketball tournament, but it's also been over 50 years since the school has had a new gymnasium.

For Rockdale Coach Dusty Loewe, as sense of tradition and a new facility drove him to push for the 2009 Tiger Classic basketball tournament.

"I remembered the tradition of the previous tournaments held at RHS and how it was a big deal back then," said. Loewe, who had previously coached at Rockdale from 1982-84. "We had a basketball tournament queen and her court during the championship game.

"But, having a facility to host a tournament had become a problem in attracting teams. A lot of area schools (Cameron, Franklin, Robinson, Elgin, Smithville, Hearne, Madisonville, Navasota) had built big modern gymnasiums so it was hard to attract schools to a tournament where the gym was built before television was invented and didn't even have a concession area."

The last time Rockdale hosted a tournament was in 1990 when Class A Calvert shocked the field to w in the championship by defeating the host Tigers 57-50.

Rogers captured the girls division by nipping LaGrange 42-41.

Legendar y Rockdale coach Ernie Laurence began putting on a girls tournament in 1955 with the Tigerettes taking the very first one 48-28 over Burton with Babs Tyler leading the way with 22 points.

Loewe and the Tigers w ill proudly welcome seven teams to their spankin' new gym beginning Thursday, including Thrall, Somerville, Robinson, Liberty, Leander Vandergrift, Marble Falls Academy and Texas Christian Academy.
