‘Students of the Week’ named at junior high

Rockdale Junior High assistant principal A llen Sanders announced the “Students of the Week” at the school.

Those students are: Cale Garza (8th grade), Velma Mitchell (7th grade) and Corey Davis (6th grade).

Rockdale ISD holiday concerts start tonight

The annual holiday concerts for RISD bands and choirs begin tonight, according to Joe Ray, band director.

The high school and sixth grade bands will hold their concerts together at 7 o’clock tonight in the RHS Auditorium. The band seniors will auction off their cakes and deserts to benefit the band booster scholarship fund, Ray said.

The high school and junior high choir concert will be with the junior high bands, which include the symphonic and concert band combined for their concert, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15 at the junior high gym.

The high school band will present the annual Christmas concert for the Elementary and Interme- diate schools on Friday, Dec. 18 at the RHS Auditorium. Each campus will be bussed to the high school to enjoy the band and their holiday favorites, Ray said.

These concerts will take place at 8:30 a.m. for the elementary and 9:15 a.m. for the intermediate.

Elementary Book Fair coming to a close

The Scholastic Book Fair at Rockdale Elementary School will continue through Friday, Dec. 11, according to Sherilyn Johnson, librarian.

“Children may purchase books during the school day or you can make it a family outing by joining us between 3:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 for Family Night,” Johnson said. Parents can also contribute books to their child’s classroom by purchasing from the teacher’s wish list.

Traveling van Gogh exhibit ends Dec. 11

One of the world’s most beloved and most misunderstood artists is coming to Rockdale Elementary and Rockdale Intermediate schools Dec. 1-11, according to Michele Fletcher, art teacher for the two campuses.

A wonderful traveling exhibit of some of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous works will conclude its stop in Rockdale on Friday, Dec. 11, according to Michele Fletcher art teacher for Rockdale Elementary and Intermediate schools. The exhibit has been at the school district since Dec. 1.

The display is currently at the Intermediate campus and features a giant reproduction of “Starry Night”, one of van Gogh’s most popular pieces.
