4 races contested on first filing day

Summers Summers Twelve Democrats and two Republicans filed for March 2, 2010, primary ballots on Thursday, the first day to sign up.

Two more Republicans have designated t rea su rers for c ampaigns.

Grand total after one day, four county races w ill be contested in November and there’s already a three-person race in the Democratic Primary.

There’s a November race for county judge shaping up, regardless of whether incumbent Democrat Frank Summers draws a primary opponent.

Summers, who is seeking his fourth term as county judge filed Thursday with Democratic Count y Chair R ichard Stone.

David Barkemeyer, who resigned both as mayor of Cameron and as county GOP chairman in order to qualify for the race, filed Thursday with new Republican County Chair Bill Whitmire.

Commissioner contest

One Democrat filed Thursday for the Precinct 4 county commissioner race and one Republican is expected to also seek that position.

Barkemeyer Barkemeyer Jeff Muegge filed on the Democratic ballot.

Buddy Johnson has filed papers with the county clerk designating a campaign treasurer to make the same race.

Incumbent Democrat Burke Bauerschlag has indicated he will not seek re-election.

JP races

A four-person race is developing for Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 where incumbent Democrat Chip Dunsmoor has promised a statement clarifying his plans at a later date.

Tom Jones, Lisa Roden and Charles Hundle all filed Thursday for the Democratic Primary.

Rick Gommert has filed papers with the county clerk designating a campaign treasurer for a run for that position.

There will be a contested general election race for JP Precinct 2 with incumbent Democrat Donald Schuerman and Republican Sam Berry both filing on Thursday.

• Cindy Fechner, district clerk.

• Kenneth Hollas, Precinct 2 commissioner.

• Danica Lara, county treasurer.

• Twila Harris, Precinct 2 JP.

• Gary Northcott, Precinct 4 JP.

• Richard Stone, County Democratic party chairman.

More GOP filings

Whitmire said the Republican Party envisions at least five more filings.

At an October GOP meeting in Rockdale the party was told at least one contested Republican Primary race is a possibility.
