Merka picked for 2010 NASA scholars programClayton Merka, a Rockdale High School junior, has been selected to participate in t he 2010 N.A.S.A High School Aerospace Scholars Program. Merka applied for the program through the Scientific Research and Design class at RHS.
The High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) is an interactive online learning experience for high school juniors in Texas. Selected students have an interest in math, science, engineering or computer science and are encouraged to consider high tech careers. Participation is highlighted by a six-day experience at the Johnson Space Center where students have the opportunity to interact with N.A.S.A. engineers.
The son of Thomas and Connie Merka, Clayton completed an extensive application process this fall and was selected for nomination to the program by State Representative Dan Gattis.
Merka has been and integral part of the RHS robotics team for the past three years and was also a freshman member of the RHS team that competed in the National Construction Challenge finals in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Clayton has repeatedly displayed a unique talent for visualizing a concept and then designing and constructing the finished product for our teams,” RHS Scientific Research and Design instructor Art Free said. “I am sure he will be an exceptional representative for Rockdale High School.”
Merka plans to pursue a career in mechanical engineering after graduation.
