Preservation funds offered in Milam for repair, restoration
Milam County Historical Commission has available funds to use for historic preservation in Milam County, according to Preservation Trust Fund Chair, Joan Ratliff.
“We have $11,500 pledged by Milam County, the City of Rockdale, the City of Thorndale, City of Buckholts and interested citizens of Gause to address preservation needs in Milam County. As a county, we are unique in this and we appreciate the support which these entities have pledged to this project,” Ratliff said. “It is a unique program which has attracted statewide attention.”
Applications are open to 501 (C)(3) organizations and other non-profit organizations. Certified Local Governments may also apply.
Funds may be used to restore and repair historic structures or may be used in purchasing historical markers for sites which have been approved, or for any other historic preservation project which may be approved by the Committee.
Application forms and complete guidelines may be picked up at the office of County Judge Frank Summers, the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce or Rainbow Courts in Rockdale.
They are also available on the Milam County Historical Commission website, www.milamcountyhistoricalcommission. org. Applications may also be obtained from any member of the Milam County Historical Commission.
“ This is the third year of operation for this Trust Fund. To date, 12 projects all over the county have been funded. These are matching grants. This means that more than $50,000 ($26,000 in grants plus $26,000 matching) in historic preservation has been funded during the past two years,” Ratliff said.
