Early voting for city ballot to start, stop, then resume

Early voting for the Jan. 9 west ward city council special election in Rockdale got under way Wednesday in Rockdale and then will stop until Monday.

That’s because early voting is at City Hall which will be closed Thursday and Friday, Dec. 24-25, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Doug Calame, who is on the ballot, and write-in candidate Donald “Duck” Shuffield are vying for the west ward position which has been open since Griffin Rogers was removed from office in September.

Only west ward voters inside the City of Rockdale will participate in the election. Check the back of your voter registration card. If it says “RKDW” under the box labeled “city” you can vote in this election.

There’s another catch. The old orange voter registration card expires Dec. 31 but can still be used to vote early through that day.

To vote early Jan. 4 and 5, the final two days of early voting, or to cast a ballot in the actual election, Jan. 9 you will need the new blue voter registration card which was mailed out last week.

Confusing? Here’s the schedule, all at City Hall:

Dec. 23—Early voting, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dec. 24—Closed for holidays.

Dec. 28-29—Extended early voting hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Dec. 30-31—Early voting 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jan. 1—Closed for holiday.

Jan. 4-5—Early voting 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jan. 9—Election day, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
