Brakes applied to area construction

2009 building projects slowest in six years
By KEN ESTEN COOKE Reporter Staff Writer

Construction crews worked on frame for Dollar General store last October. Construction crews worked on frame for Dollar General store last October. Barring a large project during the final two days of 2009, one new retail store and a church addition were the major projects for Rockdale construction this year, as that industry skidded to a near halt in the wake of layoffs and a slow economy.

Despite only two new homes permitted in the city limits last year, Rockdale had a near record year thanks to several commercial projects and the start of a school building program.

Permits totaled $2,506,764, down from 2008’s $30.8 million, a record amount which included most of the new school construction. This year’s total is the lowest since 2003.

A new Family Life Center at First Baptist Church and a new location for Dollar General were the two largest projects. (Luminant’s Sandow 5 power plant is not included because it is out of the city limits.)

There were no new homes built in the city limits in 2009.

Contractors for Rockdale ISD completed the last of their work for Rockdale’s $30-millionplus bond issue, which saw the addition of a new campus, a doubling of the high school, and improvements at the elementary and junior high.

There was also no action on the land purchased in 2007 from Wal-Mart properties by a developer out of Ruston, Louisiana. That developer planned a strip center but retailers pulled back with the contraction of the national and state economy.

December

Only seven permits were issued last month. Permits are issued at City Hall and reflect only construction in the city limits.

Projects permitted for December were: Roof Doctor for Leah Thomason, 2416 Post Oak, reroof; Reinhard Richter, 115 W. Cameron, reroof; Kountry Inn, 1121 W. Cameron, siding; Done Right Roofing for Bilie Knox, 735 Copeland, reroof; Bland Construction for Ann Evans, 216 Division, remodel; Calvin Payne, 326 S. Wilcox, sign.
