‘Blackhawk down’ in far north Milam

A U. S. Army Blackhawk helicopter, based at Fort Hood, made a weather-related landing in far north Milam County last Wednesday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

Deputy Sheriff Chris White said at 4:57 p.m. the Houston office of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) contacted the Milam County Sheriff’s Department with the news their radar indicated an aircraft had set down somewhere in the county’s northeastern portion.

Sheriff David Greene and deputies began to search an area about five miles north east of Cameron.

“Original direction given by the FAA indicated the area was around FM 1444 and CR 136,” White said. “But an update around 5:25 indicated the aircraft was between FM 979 and CR 249.”

Investigator Jay Beathard spotted the helicopter in an open field three miles north of that intersection.

“The crew was fine,” White said. “They said the weather had become too hazardous to fly, so they set the aircraft down.”

The Blackhawk flew out the following morning, White said.
