Local chapter of Red Hat Society invites members

Wanted: Women looking for fun, frivolity and friendship.

Rockdale’s Ya Yas Chapter of the Red Hat Society is open for new members.

The Societ y is made up of women over age 50 who wear red hats and purple outfits when they get together, according to Louise Mynar.

“If you’d like to spend some time with other women doing fun things such as eating out, shopping, traveling, going to the theater, movies or getting together to play games, you will love the society,” Mynar said.

Thorndale Jamboree to resume on Monday

THORNDALE—VFW Post 4009 and Auxiliary will again sponsor the Thorndale Country and Gospel Music Jamboree on Monday, Jan. 25 at the VFW Hall on north FM 486. “This is our first show for 2010 and there will be lots of good music and entertainment,” said Marjorie Menzel, publicist.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for food including sausage wraps, chicken salad sandwiches, chips, desserts and drinks. The show begins at 7 p.m.

MARC Run committee to meet here Saturday

The MARC Run Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 at The Ranch, Charles Starr has announced.

“If anyone wants to help with this year’s run and fund-raiser for the Milam Association for Retarded Citizens (MARC) Center, they are encouraged to attend, and all Bad-to-the-Bone Riders need to be there,” Starr said.

“You do not have to own a Motorcycle to help with this fundraiser which supports some very special people of our area. The MARC Center serves people with special needs for all of Milam County,” Starr said.

Republican women to meet on Tuesday

CAMERON—Republican Women of Milam County will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26 at the Budget Host Hotel in Cameron. Guest speakers are Republican candidates for Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals District, Place 4, Scott Field and Melissa Goodwin.

“A ll interested women are invited,” said Gaye Bland, local spokesperson.

Republican Women of Milam County meet at 6 p.m. each fourth Tuesday except during the summer. Meetings are held in Cameron, Rockdale and Thorndale on a rotating basis.

Family night Thursday for New Salem Club

Family night for the New Salem EEA Club will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Clubhouse and will feature a pot luck meal. Guests are welcome.

The club met Jan. 14 w ith Susan Hicks, president, leading the pledge and reporting on I&GN Depot/Museum activities. Debra Konarik gave a financial report and Marilyn Hicks led a hat game. A donations committee was appointed, consisting of Marilyn Hicks, Debra Konarik and Barbara Walko.

The Feb. 8 EE Association meeting will be at 10 a.m. at the Milano home of Cheryl Walker. Attendees are asked to bring a salad and recipe. The meeting will include cultural arts judging, electing district delegates and a leader training program.

Depot seeks fashions for historical exhibit

Late 1800 and early 1900 clothing and fashions are needed at the I&GN Depot Museum for an exhibit. The clothing would be on loan and displayed at the depot from now until the end of March, according to Mary Phillips, spokesperson.

“Also, if anyone has a mannequin or a dress form that they would loan during this time, or knows of someone that might, we would appreciate that,” Phillips said. “We will be glad to pick up loaned items or meet you at the depot if you would like to bring them.”

Project Graduation fund-raiser under way

Rockdale High School seniors are selling tickets for $1 each as a fund-raiser for Project Graduation 2010, according to Denise Betchan, spokesperson. Prizes are: 1st, $500 Visa gift card; 2nd, $250 Visa card; 3rd, $100 Visa card.

“Seniors are selling tickets during home basketball games,” Betchan said. The drawing will be held Feb. 12.

Project Graduation 2010 will hold a bake sale on Saturday, April 3, the day before Easter, at Walmart.

Genealogy society to meet on Tuesday

First meeting of the year for the Milam County Genealogical Society will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26 in the conference room at the rear of Citizens National Bank, Rockdale. Officers for 2010 will be nominated, elected and installed. Only current members will be eligible to vote.

Members can pay dues at the meeting before election. Membership dues are: Individual $15, senior citizens $10, family $20, and supporting $25.

Milano VFD sets annual chili supper

MILANO—Milano Volunteer Fire Department will hold its yearly chili supper and silent auction Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Milano Civic Center, Carolyn Vinton announced. Serving (eat-in or take-out) will begin at 4:30 p.m. until sold out. Prices (including meals, drinks, dessert) are $6 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under. The silent auction will end at 6:30 p.m.

The VFD is selling tickets, $1 each or 6 for $5, on the following: a Henry .22 rifle, Mossburg Model 500 .12 gauge, and Walmart gift cards of $100, $50 and $25. Winners will be drawn the night of the chili supper and you need not be present to win.

4-H Shooting Sports holding fund-raiser

Milam County 4-H Shooting Sports Club members are selling chances for two different hunts as a fund-raiser, spokesperson Chris Cooper said.

Prizes include a $3,000 exotic water buffalo hunt, an exotic goat hunt and a $75 Academy gift card. Tickets are $10 each or six for $50. Drawing will be May 15.
