Arson ruled out, drug arrest in Cameron fire

Investigators have ruled out arson in connection with a fire which destroyed a bar in Cameron early Monday, while police made a drug arrest after firefighters discovered cocaine at the location.

Cameron Fire Marshal John Mendoza said the blaze which destroyed Vega’s Bar at the Travis Gillis intersection looks to be accidental.

The Cameron Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene at 1:26 a.m. Monday.

During the blaze firefighters found a substance believed to be cocaine in a back apartment at the bar, according to Cameron police.

Victor Chico-Manuel, 25, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance (less than one gram). He remained in the county jail Tuesday on $5,000 bond.
