EDUCATION NOTESMynar named to SFA President’s Honor Roll
NACOGDOCHES–Tanya Denise Mynar, interdisciplinary studies major from Rockdale, has been named to the President’s Honor Roll at Stephen F. Austin State University for the fall semester.
To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and maintain a grade point average of 4.0.
Mantey on Angelo State honor list
SAN ANGELO–Dale S. Mantey has been named to the Angelo State University Dean’s List for the fall 2009 semester.
To be eligible for the honor, students must be enrolled full-time and maintain a 3.25 GPA.
McCoy earns honor at McLennan CC
WACO–Adam McCoy, an audio engineering major, has been named to McLennan Community College’s Distinguished Honors List for the fall 2009 semester. The Distinguished Honors List is reserved for students who achieve a 3.8 to 4.0 GPA and who are enrolled full time.
McCoy completed 23 hours and earned a 4.0 GPA. He is the son of John & Yvette McCoy.
Locals make SHSU Dean’s list
HUNTSVILLE–Several Rockdale students have been named to the Dean’s list at Sam Houston State University.
Those students include: Aaron Robert Coker, junior, industrial technology construction management; Jaime Nicole David, junior; interdisciplinary studies; Megan Lee Hilker, senior, accounting; Thomas J. Merka IV, sophomore, mass communications; Kara E. Phillips, freshman, English; Morgan Leigh Rios, sophomore, computing science.
The Dean’s list at SHSU consists of all full-time students having a GPA of 3.5 and above.
Prom organizational meeting set Feb. 4
There will be a meeting for all Rockdale High School juniors and their parents who are interested in helping with this year’s prom, Jamie Streck said. The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4 in the high school cafeteria.
Thorndale Elem. to host book fair
THORNDALE–There will be a book fair at the Thorndale Elementary Library from Feb. 1-4, according to librarian Valerie Page. The book fair will be held each day from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a Family Night on Feb. 4 fro 5:30- 7:30 p.m. in order to give parents an opportunity to attend the book fair with their children, Page said.
Books bought at the book fair will be taken home the same day, they do not have to be ordered.
“Community members are invited to attend as well,” Page said. “Profits from the book fair will be used to purchase additional library materials.”
Scout heading up school book drive
Justin Ferguson is heading up an effort to collect books for a local school and in the process earn his Eagle Scout rank. In order to earn the rank he must organize and carry out a service project. Ferguson is doing so by holding a book drive on Saturday, Jan. 30 with drop off locations at Walmart in Rockdale, Brookshire Brothers in Cameron and Milano Elementary School.
Books collected are for a local school’s library, Ferguson said. Donations are to be for reading levels Pre-K through high school. For more information, contact Ferguson at email@example.com.
Annuals for ‘09-10 on sale this week
Beginning this week, The Lair staff will be selling high school and elementary books for the 2009-10 school year, according to spokesperson Linda King. These books are full color, and will be on sale for the lowest price of the year. High school books (grades 6-12) will be on sale for $40 and elementary books (grades K-5) will be on sale for $20.
If you choose to buy both books, you will receive a $5 discount, with the total for both books coming to $55, King said.
