Petition passed to take remainder of RHD sales tax
A petition is being circulated for a ballot referendum that would see the City of Rockdale take the remaining half-cent sales tax from the Rockdale Hospital District.
With Blackhawk Healthcare in the process of buying Richards Memorial Hospital, and eventually add capacity, hospital district board chair Dr. John Weed III told a civic group recently he could foresee phasing out the tax. But the city is forcing the issue in hopes of getting it on the May election ballot.
“We have about 50 signatures and need 81 to get it on the ballot,” City Manager Kelvin Knauf said Monday night. The city could use the additional half-cent sales tax, which generates roughly $150,000 a year, for economic development.
Last May, the Municipal Development District was created. That entity should begin seeing its first sales tax rebate from the state next month.
Hospital district directors use the sales tax revenue to pay for indigent care needs.
