Budget was balanced with stimulus fundsDear editor,
We have a few comments we would like to make about the Ogden-Dewhurst proposal in last week’s paper.
We find it interesting that the Republicans are so horrified by the deficits in the current federal budget.
The federal budget was balanced and contained a surplus in 2000 when President George W. Bush and the Republicans took office.
His first year in office he pushed through massive tax cuts for the wealthy, assuming the surplus would continue.
In response to the 9/11/2001 terrorist attack Bush invaded Afghanistan. Next he launched a preemptive war on Iraq. He funded both these wars with emergency funding bills that were never included in the budget.
In 2008 when President Barack Obama took office the Budget deficit was $8 trillion, and the U.S. economy as well as the world’s economy was collapsing.
Now that President Obama has been in office a year, the Republicans think he should have cleaned up their mess and balanced the budget?
We are also tired of hearing Rick Perr y, Steve Ogden and David Dewhurst brag about Texas’ balanced budget.
The 2010–2011 Texas budget was balanced by using $12.1 billion from the federal stimulus funds which Governor Perr y ranted and raved against, saying that he would never accept funds from this stimulus package.
