Counties set forage clinic on March 12

On March 12, forage producers will have an opportunity to learn new management techniques for your pastures as well as tips on recovering from the recent droughts.

The clinic will be held at the Buckholts Community Center. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 9. The event will last until 2 p.m. and include a noon meal.

Dr. Barron Rector, extension range specialist, will discuss the use of grazing management strategies to maximize forage utilization and growth, weed management and livestock performance.

Also on the program, Dr. Sonja Swiger, entomologist, will attend and present a program on management of insect pests important to forage production including grasshoppers and armyworms. Additionally, Dr. Larry Redmon, forage specialist, will discuss managing pastures coming out of the drought, determine if the stand will recover, and discuss replacement options, including native and adapted monocultures that require less inputs than bermuda grasses.

Cost for the program is $15 and an RSVP will be required to plan for the meal. Please RSVP by March 10 by calling the Milam County Extension Office at 254- 697-7045.
